Last Night I Had This Dream

I had this dream,
In which you came to visit me
At the house of my family, during some sort of party.
Jet-lagged and feeling awkward,
You wandered off somewhere in the strange dream-house.
As soon as I had a chance to slip away,
I came looking for you,
And found you
Napping on the couch
In the guest room.
I saw you there,
All wrapped up in my blanket,
Peaceful, youthful, beautiful,
And it almost moved me to tears.
My chance at last had come.
I outstretched my hand,
Hovering it hesitantly over your head,
Tempted strongly to tenderly stroke your hair,
But I knew it would wake you up
And you would see me standing there,
And you would be unhappy with me,
Because I'm not supposed to think such thoughts anymore,
Because I no longer have the right to touch you,
Not that I ever could.
Surely enough, your eyes fluttered open like shy butterflies,
Drowsy, unfocused,
Then you saw me standing, staring sadly at you.
Love was burning clear in my eyes, without a cloud,
Expressing everything that I could never say aloud.
Our eyes met for just half a moment,
And I hurriedly averted mine,
But I knew you knew why.
Why must my dreams torture me?
For, even in dreams, I can't get what I want.
