Abuela Alma Madrigal is a strict and stern woman who does what she can to protect her family. That is the main description everyone in Encanto would describe the matriarch.
Alma treated everyone in the town with equal respect, well – except the Martinez family. It was well known how close the Martinez and Madrigal families were, Alma was also very partial to the Martinez's.
But despite the partialness and how Alma treats her friend's grandchildren and children like her own, getting her own personal favor was difficult for someone not of her blood.
That was until Clara Martinez had proven her otherwise.
It was a year after Camilo's gift ceremony and the disaster that was Mirabel's gift ceremony. Abuela significantly became stricter to her family and the townspeople since then.
Walking back to the Casita, the Abuela heard cries of a familiar voice. She turns her head and saw her grandson Camilo by the town square. A bit alarmed, she took a step forward, about to call out to the 6 year old boy.
"Milo, Hermoso, it's okay." A soft voice said, halting Alma from her steps. She sees Clara crouch down to Camilo's level and gently start wiping away his tears.
"But I lost it! It was your Abuela's right?" Camilo said to her, throat a bit strained from his gasps and cries. Clara huffed at that, "That old hairpiece? It was, but it's fine. I'm not mad." She said back.
Clara wore a small gift from her late Abuela, a ribbon hairpiece that tied half of her back. The long ends of the ribbon always swayed with her wavy locks and it became some kind of norm to see it on the girl's head.
There were days when the two friends would mess around and Clara would tie up Camilo's hair as a joke. It seems that today, they lost the hairpiece while having fun around town.
"We both lost it since we were both responsible. And as the current owner, I forgive you." Clara stated gently as she lightly pats on Camilo's cheeks.
Camilo sniffed, "But still... it was precious to you." He said back, guilty. "No worries Milo, I have a lot to remember mi Abuela by. Pictures, stories, mi Abuelo's drawings, so it's really okay." She reassured the boy.
Seeing that Camilo was still guilty and crying, Clara lets out a small sheepish sigh. She puts her forehead on his, "Hermoso... Everything is okay so please calm down a little bit, okay?" she whispered to him.
Camilo forced out a nod, feeling her hands cup his cheeks. Clara's thumbs wiping the tear streaks lining his face.
A soft melody then made its way to the breeze. Alma realized that it was Clara singing.
"Dos oruguitas enamoradas. Pasan sus noches y madrugadas."
Alma freezes in place, listening to the song as the little girl comforted the boy. The melody continued on, soft, sweet, and gentle.
Alma closes her eyes, as if reliving the life she once had. The beauty of her life with her late husband and how circumstances had changed her and her life.
"Ay oruguitas, no se aguanten más." Clara sang in a small tone, slowly lifting Camilo's head. "Hay que crecer a parte y volver. Hacia adelante seguirás." She continued, smiling.
Still foreheads together, Clara sung a little more of the lyrics. "Vienen milagros, vienen crisálidas.". Camilo lets out a calmer breath, feeling at ease as Clara finished the verse.
