The first guests had already arrived and were mingling downstairs in the foyer. Rory had been scrambling to find Sam, as she had realized she was all alone and knew no one at the party.
"There you are," she sighed of relief once she had found Sam in the kitchen snacking on the sugar cookies.
"Woah, Rory. You look amazing."
Rory returned a gentle smile. "You think? Thank you."
"Woah, my mom's friend outdid herself."
"That woman is an artist," Rory agreed. "I love this color."
"I've only met her once, but she's got a great reputation. But anyway, you've got to try this," he said through a full mouth, his eyes brightening with enthusiasm as he fed her a bite of a sugar cookie.
"Woah, these are good." She could easily tell they were homemade.
"Ezra made them. He was up most of the night making desserts because the bakery order was canceled."
"They're delicious!"
"Thanks," he frowned slightly. "But I did ask him to make snickerdoodles. I remember you saying they were your favorite, but I guess he ran out of sugar."
"That's alright," she replied. "These sugar cookies are amazing. I think I can live without a snickerdoodle."
"Samuel," Loretta rushed in, holding her black long dress."I thought you promised to mingle at least for a little while as the guests arrived."
Loretta's gaze landed on Rory. "Oh, you look beautiful. The dress is spectacular!" She hummed, admiring from where she stood. She clapped her hands together in joy.
"Mom," Sam continued to munch. "These are so good. I might not leave the kitchen."
Loretta gave her son a warning stare," Rory is too beautiful to be stuck in the kitchen. The dress deserves to be admired."
"Fine." Sam placed five cookies in his hand before muttering something and grabbing Rory's hand to lead her out. "Sorry Rory, it won't be too long."
"It's fine," Rory assured him. "I don't mind who I run into. Anyways your mom is right. This dress is too gorgeous to not be seen." Maybe it was the dress, but she felt confident.
They arrived at the entrance of two wide-open double doors. Inside was an enormous room with chandelier lighting and a shiny floor.
"You own a ballroom?" Rory was shocked.
"My parents own a ballroom," he corrected. "Rich people love to party."
Everyone was in either a black tie or a beautiful dress. The room screamed wealth and elegance. It was almost like a fairytale. There was live music that included a violinist playing the most enchanting songs. There were also servers passing around drinks and fancy snack food on silver trays. Most of the food Rory had never seen before.
"This is a whole other level," She gawked.
"It is our family's biggest party of the year. But don't let the image fool you. Everyone is here for business. Most of these people are snobby and money-hungry. Only a few familiar faces are sincere."
They didn't seem like they were at all. The faces in the room looked happy to be there. Many groups burst out in laughter whilst others were in thoughtful conversations. They all looked so elegant.
"Uh oh," Sam said out loud which made Rory follow his gaze.
It was Harley. Looking handsome and prince-like in an all-black suit. He was gorgeous. And beside him, was Olivia in a sparkly beige dress. She was shining with all the sparkles on her dress and the diamond around her neck. She looked like a princess, fit for the dark prince.
