The Last City - Newt
"Would it kill you to discipline your dog?" Teresa asked.
"It might but I've got nine lives, so it wouldn't really matter. Besides, Daisy is just telling ya she loves ya." Newt said, reading a book that Evan had given Teresa, but because Evan had given it to her, she had tossed it in the corner.
"By licking my face?" Teresa asked.
"Yes. And you should give this book a try." Newt said. She ripped the book out of his hand.
"Harry Potter and the prisoner of Azkaban? I've read them." Teresa said.
"Them? There's more?" Newt asked.
"Yeah, Ava had all the movie copies on dvd and all the books. She really loved them."
"Ava Paige?" Newt asked.
"Yeah."
"Oh." Newt sometimes forgot that Teresa had grown up in a WCKD facility, and that most of the WCKD scientists were the closest thing she had to a family.
"Do you want me to tell you how they end?" Teresa asked.
"No. I wanna find the rest of them and read them." Newt responded. He knew it was a stupid idea to think he could find and read all of them, but it was something to look forward to. Especially since this was The Scorch, and nothing was salvaged in The Scorch.
"We've got to go." Teresa said, picking up her things.
"How long do you think it'll take us to get there?" Newt asked.
"Not sure, you do remember how to get to the base of the boating dock, right?" She asked.
"Yes, I think." He answered.
"You think?"
"Teresa, I know." Newt said.
"Good, because Evan thinks we will be done the berg by the end of the week." Newt smiled.
He was getting back to Tommy.
***
Newt couldn't hear anything in the streets except for the footsteps of his and Teresa's.
"I'm scared of getting to the Safe Haven." Newt admitted.
Teresa scoffed. "Me too." She said.
"I don't know how to act around Tommy."
"I don't know how to act around him either." Teresa said. Daisy was wagging her tail at the mention of Thomas. Newt has stayed up late on multiple occasions to tell Daisy about Thomas and the Safe Haven. Newt knows deep down Daisy doesn't understand what he's saying, but if he gets excited about a topic, Daisy understands that it is something to look forward to.
"I think maybe you have a point. Maybe." Newt said. He didn't want to tell Teresa she was right about him loving Thomas.
"Oh my lord! Are you saying I'm right about something?" Teresa asked. She had a smile on her face, and Newt knew that it was genuine.
"No. I'm saying ya might have a point about Thomas." Newt said, he had started to think of Teresa as somewhat of a friend, and that he might've been wrong about her. However that still didn't mean that she had to be right all the time.
"Okay look, I spent awhile watching you." She said, turning to look at him as they walked.
"Thanks for that piece of knowledge, stalker." Newt said. Teresa rolled her eyes.
