Chapter 23

White lights.

They were blinding. A doctor stood over me. "Hi, I'm your nurse Jenna. Don't panic alright honey, we just gave you some medicine to help you get out of your comma. You have been asleep for about two weeks. You’re not going to be able to talk because of your breathing tubes. Your parents are getting something to eat they should be back soon we just want to do a few tests. I need you to blink both eyes if you understood that" she said kindly.

I blinked.

"Good job, so what I need you to do now is move your right toes"

I did what she asked feeling them move around in my socks.

"Great how about your left hand" she smiled writing something down on a pad of paper.

I squeezed my left hand together my long manicures nails grazing my fingers.

"Great the doctors should be able to take out your tubes soon so you can talk. I’ll send for them. Sit tight" she said walking out.

A few moments later a doctor walked in. He was an older guy with a mustache.

"Hey there Gwen, your parents should be here at any moment. So this is going to feel a little weird but it shouldn't hurt. If it doesn't I want you to shut your eyes okay?" he said turning of a machine next to my bed and pressing a button that propped up my bed.

Then he moved over to me and slowly began pulling the tube out of my throat. I gagged a little but before I knew it, it was out. My throat felt rough and scratchy. He walked away only to return a few moments later with a glass of water. I gulped It down and muttered a thanks.

"Alright do you remember what happened?" he asked pulling a chair up to my bed.

"Um, there was a car accident. I was sitting on the side of the car that got hit and-" I paused my mouth opening in a gag my eyes burning. A sob escaped my lips and tears rapidly flooded my face. "Gav.... In..." I stuttered.

The doctor looked me over cautiously. "It’s normal to be emotionally at this time," he began.

He was interrupted by my mom and dad rushing in and starting to fuss over me and hug me.

"Oh honey!" my mother yelled wrapping her arms around me. I continued to sob. I wanted to yell and scream but I found my mouth dry.

I wanted to know about Gavin. I needed to know. I couldn't speak though. My heart pounded in my chest and my voice wouldn't come to save my life.

"We are so glad you’re okay!" my dad said starting to tear up.

"You’ve been asleep for three weeks Gwen. We thought we lost you for good. You hit your head pretty hard on the side of the door. You sprained your right wrist and ankle. Oh and you broke a rib. Not to mention all the blood you lost because of the cuts..." my mother said through tears resting the back of her hand on my cheek.

"Mom?" I asked between sobs my chest rising and falling rapidly and dramatically.

"Yes dear?" she said carefully as if the thing she said were as dangerous as rocks on breakaway glass.

"Gavin...?" I sobbed my face feeling hot.

"oh sweetie..." my dad started.

"No!!!!" I screamed. I thrashed angrily. It hurt terribly to move but I only wanted to be dead. Without Gavin my world was flipped. Lifeless. Hit the bucket. Buried. Gone. Dead. I struggled to keep my breathing normal. My parents stared down at me horrified.

The doctor rushed over putting a needle into my leg that made me feel peacefully and sleepy. Oh please let this be the end I begged as I felt my heart shatter in my chest.

....……………………

"Gwen? Gwen your eyes are fluttering are you awake yet?"

A warm hand touched my face sending tingles down my spine. That sound, Gavin's voice. My eyes flung open in happiness. It was dark in my room but I could see him perfectly. His face stared down at me in shock. His prefect face was slightly altered. His once brilliant green eyes seemed dull and tired. They also were red and puffy. His flawless skin had scrapes, scars and cuts on it.

Suddenly his expression shifted his eyes instantly becoming bright, a smile forming on his lips and his skin looking like it was glowing.

"Oh my god Gwen..." he whispered. Running his finger down my face.

"Am I dead?" I asked. He had died right? So I must have too...

Gavin's eyes formed tears that dripped down onto me. "No, Gwen you’re alive. You scared me so much. I've never... Been so frightened in my life"

He gently hugged me. I reached my arms up around him hugging him as hard as I could.

"I thought you were dead..." I sobbed.

"No you’re the one I was worried about. You got off a lot worse than I did. I woke up a day after the accident. Glass from the windshield pierced my chest and I got some nasty whiplash but no serious injuries. Do you know how terrible it was to wait....? For three weeks for you... You looked so peacefully. I would wake up with nightmares thinking you were really gone..." he said resting his head on my sobbing so hard I thought he would rock the bed.

"Oh Gavin..." I whispered happily. He wasn't dead. He was here, with me. I thought my heart was going to pop out of my chest.

……………

After a month of physical therapy I was finally going to be released from the hospital and it's nasty food. My parents left two weeks ago and Gavin was due to be in my room in no time.

I smiled as I looked at the ticking clock. I was finally getting out. I had been in this room for almost two months. I looked down at myself. My ripped Abercrombie jeans seemed to be happy to see me too. My toes seemed happy to be in my old navy flip flops. The most amazing thing though, was wearing a padded bra. I had been living bra less and in sports bras.

That alone was enough to make me jump for joy. I looked down at my necklace. It shined at me beaming with happiness too. Gavin had gotten me it while I was asleep and presented it to me the day I woke up.

It was two sterling silver hearts intertwined and where they over lapped sat a big, fat, beautiful diamond. In the center of the diamond if you looked closely was forever inscribed in perfect cursive letters.

I wore two camis, one pink and one orange with a light plaid shirt over it. The sun shined through my window giving me hope.

Normally I would be mad that Gavin was late but today almost nothing could pull the smile off my face. After the accident I had been strangely optimistic. Our parents had decided that we were allowed back home, I think they had their suspicions. But we refused the offer staying in Australia.

Suddenly I was shaken from my thoughts as footsteps echoed towards my room. Gavin turned the corner flipping his hair.

He looked so angelic. His light brown hair swayed across his face flipping out in all the right places. He wore Jordan’s, dark jeans and a light blue Hollister tee with rolling waves on it and a couple kissing on the empty beach. His smiled shone brightly as he saw me.

I got up from my spot on the hospital bed to run into his arms happy as a clam.
