Chapter four.

Surprise, Everyone loses.

I looked at my mom eager to get away from the awkward situation that had just played out. Dinner with my ex-best friend, the person I hated, it was just awkward because I had nothing to say to him. I owed him no words. Gavin shoveled in a spoonful of food so he couldn't answer any more of the parents questions allowing them to move the conversation more toward themselves and work.

Finally, after what seemed like hours the dinner plates were cleared and the long table was filled with champagne and tall green wine glasses filled with some imported green ice cream. I took a huge spoonful waiting for the news and immediately felt like Mia from the princess diaries and politely when no one was looking spit it out. It was some sort of sherbet and it felt like there were still ice crystals forming in my mouth from its freezing torture. I grabbed some water and gargled to myself quietly in order to unthaw.

Gavin saw and snorted at me, as if to say we can't take you anywhere. Finally, my mom taking a sip of the champagne banged her dainty dessert fork on the glass. The other parents nodded at her approvingly and smiled graciously at Gavin and I. Gavin and I picked up our champagne glasses following our parents suit in preparation for a toast. Why wasn't he looking at me too? Didn't he know the secret? Oh this was turning bad quickly. I felt my stomach knot up and a choking sensation in my throat.

"To Gavin and Gwen" my dad started, looking at the two of us and beaming.

Oh crap this already sounded bad, the knots in my stomach were clearly for a reason. I looked to Gavin. He looked like he was going to throw up on himself.

"Good luck to your new album, a combo of two blooming new artists" finished his dad, taking clearly a lot of pride in the news.

Dread, instant and deep set dread. Why was this happening. I was okay with monthly visits, barely but weeks of time together with that slime ball.... I looked over at him angrily and noticed his mouth was also hanging ajar. I paused still in shock from the shear agony that was me. Yes he was handsome, yes he was popular yes he was, a self absorbent asshole above all else!!

"What a surprise huh!?" asked my mom twirling her ruby earring in her fingers and sipping the champagne.

"Ahhh" was all I could say, well kind of murmured in shock actually. I looked to Gavin to be the charismatic one and say something, anything!

"That's right your making an entire album together!" Gavin's mom said clapping her hands together in happiness. "Oh! It'll be just like old times!" She said her face turning peachy in happiness.

"A whole combo... " coughed Gavin, pulling on his tie. He face was red and I could tell he wished to be anywhere but here. His hands were clenched in fists and knuckles were white.

"Do I get any songs to myself? I mean all the harmonizing, two people and I'm only just learning!" I said dropping my spoon. It clanged against the floor echoing in the almost silent room. I didn't mean to sound unthankful for their generosity in helping to get yet another record deal but I had just worked so hard on my first.

"Well heres the plan, you each get three songs to yourselves then together your doing four! Isn't that exciting writing songs with your bestfriend?" asked my dad he had a huge dorky smile glued on his face. And at that moment... It made me feel sick. I felt the knot in my stomach churn and I'm sure my face paled out. Gavin was a lot of things but not my best friend. Could I even do this?

"It will be really good promo for you both!" smiled Gavin's dad, always the salesman.

"Can I be excused?" I asked loudly. "I just... I just can't wait to tell Alyssa and Tiffany! You know them! Always sharing in my excitement!! Thank you guys so much for the surprise! Really a treat!" I yelled pretty much all as one word as I hug each of the parents and dashed out of the room like a woman in fire.
