Is being awake any better when every detail reminds him of her? Gabriel isn't sure.

At night it's like he's haunted by a ghost. In the morning, it's like he's haunted by his son. He finds his son's features to be oddly similar to his late wife's and it's somehow his favorite and least favorite thing about the boy.

Nathalie, on the other hand, never reminds him of Emilie. The two are opposite in every way. Emilie was bubbly and charismatic. Nathalie is cold and rarely caring. The thing he loves yet hates about Nathalie? Her loyalty.

Nathalie’s loyalty had been greatly misplaced. Despite her actions as Mayura, she was far from an evil person. Her loyalty reminds him of who he once was when he led the life of a fashion designer and only that.

Sleep doesn't come any easier this night either. However, the visions that come to his head are different than the ones he typically fights off.

The happiness that comes first doesn't come at all. He is tossed into some field and he is unaware of where he is. He looks down to the name Emilie Agreste carefully carved onto the gravestone.

Tears start spilling from his eyes. This realm had given him a lot where he hadn't just failed numerous times but a universe where he had given up altogether.

She comes up behind and hugs him. She may be a foot shorter but that doesn't stop her. This part feels vaguely familiar, sometimes her loyalty penetrates her cold demeanor and she can be compassionate.

As she steps beside him the image switches. The bluenette’s hair turns blonde and the name below him changes from Emilie Agreste to Nathalie Sancoeur.

“She deserved it!” Emilie spits.

Gabriel is shocked because never had he heard Emilie so vengeful.

Gabriel tries to object, defend her but his voice comes out dry and hoarse. He coughs between his tears, his breathing shaky.

“Sir,” the voice comes from beside him but it's not wife’s.

He tries to call back, say anything, but his voice fails him.

“Sir!” it's louder this time, trying to reach him.

He tries running to her, maybe he can shatter this world that his mind trapped him in. It fails as he trips on the first step.

“Gabriel!” her voice feels so close yet like she is a billion worlds away.

His name, it seems to be the same slap from reality every time. He doesn't know if it's just the way it comes off his tongue but her voice conveys the worry of a thousand words while only being one. Her voice strays away from its typical emotionally monotone as it begs him to wake.

Her shadow is easy to find. She's standing beside the bed. He can make out a cup of something in her hand and can tell that he is dressed for the workday.

“I’m sorry,” she quickly says, “I know you said to leave you be but-” her sentence cuts off, it isn't worth lying when the answer is clear, “I feared you would wake Adrien,” she says anyway.

He moved to see the clock, 5 am, there wasn't a point in trying to sleep. Even if he could find it, he didn't want to go back to where he just came.

Nathalie goes to leave, she shouldn’t be here. She takes a sip of her coffee and she looks at Gabriel one last time. A man trying to restore his family but breaking himself in the process.

“I love you,” she whispers, it's under her breath, she can't dare let him hear the explicit phrase. She knows it to be true because she would do anything for him.
