Warnings: none, angst/fluff
-------------------
He was a river, a never ending flow of movement. Attached to nothing and everything- corroding what little he touched. He stayed not for long, leaving a mark that would last centuries. Occasionally, similar to a fish, he would return with a purpose.
Hisoka had no home, you were desperate to build him one. Like many of the rocks in his river, you chipped away, becoming an unrecognizable version of yourself.
You were nothing to him, or so he convinced himself. Hisoka would admit it was cute seeing you try to help him, but he did not want it. A constant reminder that you cannot help someone if they are not ready.
Often, he would catch himself staring at you, hoping someone would take pity on his precious stone, lifting you from the river and home. You deserved better, you always have, he wished it didn't take your edges chipping for him to notice.
Hisoka could only hope the river leading him to you would run dry, that a dam preventing him from sweeping through would be built.
He had tried his best to ignore it, to push it away and pretend it didn't exist. You were no one, an occasional toy he'd use and abandon. If he dared to show an ounce of genuine care, there would be a target on your back.
"Dove," he muttered, resting his face in the crook of your neck, arms wrapping around your waist. "Why won't you fly free?"
Though he was indirect, you understood, but It was hard to imagine a life without him in it.
Peering up at him, fingers tracing his jaw, you frowned. "A magician needs their dove, how else will they perform?"
Feelings had never been an issue with him, but when it came to you, he was lost.
He smiled against your skin, inhaling your scent. "What kind of magician would I be if I only had one trick?" you were his favorite, of course, but he would tuck it away if it meant you were safe.
Silence filled the room. Usually, Hisoka would let up and move on, but tonight was different. You could feel it as dread creeped up on you.
"Don't you want to do something with your life, become someone, my dove?" you had mentioned wanting to travel, listing 100's of places you were dying to see. "You can't travel the world with me by your side, I can not give you what you need."
He wasn't wrong, but you didn't want him to be right either. It was you and him against the world, you'd give up everything for him- he knew that. Any other person and he would have used that to his advantage, but it was you.
You leant against him as tears pricked your eyes, this was his goodbye. No matter what you said, how much you fought, he was leaving. "I don't want anything if it's without you."
He placed gentle kisses down your neck, tightening his hold in a last minute effort to conserve the peace. In another life, he would stay.
"Let's go to bed, my dove."
