"Good news!" Mrs. Kim says as she enters the kitchen with a bright smile. "Namjoon got dispatched from the hospital. He's in the car right now, I just wanted to let you know before bringing him in."
"Oh," I say while finishing the last noodles in my bowl. "It's only been a day, he sure made a fast recovery. Does he know I'm staying here?"
"Yes, I told him everything that happened when he woke up yesterday."
"And he doesn't mind having a stranger in the house?"
Mrs. Kim smiles sheepishly.
"He's a little uncomfortable at the thought, but I'm sure you'll get along just fine! I'll go get him and introduce you."
She skips out of the room and I'm left dreading the future in store for me. I've only been here for a day and I know I should go check on the machine. Not to mention no one can find out the truth about me. The butterfly effect is very much something to be feared. Even just being at the wrong place at the wrong time can have lasting effects on the future.
But it also makes me think if I might be able to change things for the better. It's tempting, but it's probably too risky to try. What if I mess up and just straight up disappear? Or maybe the time machine disappears and I'm stuck in the past forever. Either way, being around Namjoon, a person who definitely knew me in the future, would be like playing with fire. I should try to keep a distance if possible.
I hear the sound of footsteps and I get up from my chair to meet my new housemate. Namjoon stands slightly behind his mother, looking a bit wary of me. I bow to him to show respect since I'm staying in his house after all. It's funny how he looks just like a smaller version of the Namjoon I knew. It's the same neat, dark brown hair and the same serious face behind the round glasses. Admittedly, he's a bit cuter now than when he's grown up, at that point he's mostly just scary.
"Hello, I'm Jeon Jungkook. I'm grateful to be staying here and I won't cause you any trouble."
Namjoon's mom gives him a little shove and he bows back at me.
"Nice to meet you. I'm Kim Namjoon. I'm 14 years old and go to the south Yangsan highschool."
"Namjoon, as you already know, Jungkook saved the both of us from a terrible accident and we need to be nice to him. He has some medical problems of his own and I expect you to help him if he needs it, okay?"
"Yes, of course."
"Um, if you need anything from me I'm happy to help as well," I say.
Much to my surprise, Namjoon gives a small smile and nods. No way, did I actually manage to give a good first impression? This is already much better than expected. I don't think he's smiled at me before. Ever.
"I have a meeting to attend, so I'll leave you two alone for a while. Maybe get to know each other a little? See you later!"
Mrs. Kim leaves yet again and I gesture for Namjoon to have a seat at the table since there's still some food left.
"You cooked this?" he asks as he sits down.
"Yeah, it's not anything special, but I figured I can at least cook if I'm staying here."
"It smells nice."
He grabs a bowl and fills it up completely. Guess he's hungry from staying overnight at the hospital, or maybe he just doesn't want to make me feel bad by eating a tiny portion.
"So, how are you feeling? Do you hurt anywhere?"
"I'm fine," he says with a shrug. "Must've hit my head in the crash, but it didn't leave any major injuries. Say, is there eggplant in this?"
