Author's NOTE: This is a Mortal Kombat X story which means you have to at least have played mk9 and mkx to fully understand it.

I let out a scream as I opened my eyes, the nightmares of my family's deaths plaguing my mind once more. I quickly looked down at my hands to see the blood that covered them in my dreams was now gone. I sighed and tried to calm down my heart hoping that the guards will not sense the growing fear inside me. They were demons, after all, their kind thrived from the fear of their captives.

I looked towards where my cellmate's bed is to find him just sitting there "looking" out of our tiny barred window. I say "looking" because he was blind, his eyesight was taken by the sick twisted people that locked us in here in the first place the priests of the brotherhood of Shadows.

"Are you alright boy?" He asked as he continued "looking" out the window.

"I'll be fine Mr. Kaire" I answered and once again looked down at my hands. Mr. Kaire was already here when I was brought in three years ago. A dark-skinned man with brown hair in his late 30s, thin as a twig from the lack of food, and a beard that reached his belly. He has been in this hell for 10 years now but when he tried to escape they tortured and blinded him.

He always told me never to try to escape. 'You may be able to escape the building but you never escape the realm'. That's what he told me from day one and it's true. This hell hole we are in isn't Earth, it's the Netherealm.

Mr. Kaire would tell me stories about the realm he came from and his life there every day to pass the time and today was no exception. Mr. Kaire came from a different realm entirely the name was Outworld a world filled with barren wastelands, vast deserts, molten caverns, pools of acid, dense forests with animated faces, sinister temples and shrines, and high mysterious mountain peaks it was quite bizarre. It is from his stories that I could learn more about the world having been robbed of that chance at the ripe old age of 10. Apart from stories he also taught me English as a better way for us to communicate since I only knew Japanese when I was first brought here. As he was telling me the story about their cruel ruler Shao Kahn a demon came and hit the bars with his weapon effectively getting our attention.

"Old meat, get ready," The demon said. By old meat, he meant Mr. Kaire everyone in this place went by a nickname chosen by the demons since they couldn't be bothered to learn names.

Mr. Kaire got up from the bed and slowly made his way to the door, but his slow walking made the demon inpatient so he grabbed him and threw him to the floor in front of the dark priests.

"Mr. Kaire!" I yelled and tried to go help him stand only to be roughly grabbed and thrown back into the cell by the demon.

"Don't do that again little mouse" The demon grunted and closed the cell's door leaving me all alone.

I sat at the corner of my room for what felt like hours waiting I couldn't even tell the time in this place because there was no sun but eventually the door opened and another demon threw Mr. Kaire inside him hitting the floor in the presses. As the door closed I went and helped Mr. Kaire to his bed and got an old rag to help clean up the new wounds that were opened on his body by the tortures.

"There's no need boy, after all, we can't die from bleeding out in this realm"

"I know but we can get infected, why go through the pain?"

I quickly cleaned his wound and banded it with some other rags that were left in the cell.

"There is something I never understood about you boy..."

"And what is that?"

"How can you be so strong?"

At his question, I looked down at my hands lost in thought remembering one of the many wise things my father told me 'Willpower is what makes your destiny your own' It was as if I could hear his voice. 'Promise me you'll be strong, Satoshi'. As I looked up at Mr. Kaire I answered.

"I promised my father"

Mr. Kaire seemed satisfied with my answer and asked me if I wanted him to continue the story about the ruler of Outworld Shao Kahn to which I agreed.

Unknown to us someone else was also listening to our conversation and was satisfied with my answer.
