The Intern

Part 2

Akshara Goenka:

Everything that had to go wrong today was going wrong. Akshara couldn't believe she was late for her first day of internship. First her alarm didn't go off. Afterwards, she took the wrong train and now she just bumped into one of the senior doctors.

"So sorry!" Akshara moved the hair from her face and tried to face the person in front of her. "Sorry, sir." What a bad first impression, Akshara thought. The doctor in front of her stared at her. Akshara tried to get a better look of him and looked up. Her first thought was that he was too handsome to be a doctor and seeing him look at her with such intensity, she felt nervous and looked down again. He asked her for her name. Akshara gulped and answered. He smiled. "Welcome to the Birla Hospital, Akshara. It will be a pleasure to have you here." Well at least he's nice.

Akshara walked to her group and stood next to her friend, Khushi. "Why didn't you wait for me?" Akshara whispered to Khushi. "We were running late, I couldn't risk it, Akshu. You understand, na?" Akshu did. She would have done the same. "But how lucky that you got to talk to Dr. Abhimanyu. He's so hot, no?" Akshu smiled. "Khushi, we are here to work."

Dr. Abhimanyu was indeed very good-looking but Akshu knew she couldn't risk being distracted. She worked too hard to get there. After her parents passed away, along with her siblings, Akshu went to live with her grandparents.  After losing their son and bahu, Akshu's Bade Papa and Badi Mama became overly protective of the children. Akshu was never allowed to go anywhere or do anything except going to school. Akshu spent all her time studying to get into medical school and when she finally did, nothing much changed for her. Her life still only consisted of home and her university. She still spent all her free time studying.

It was a shock for the whole family when her internship placement turned out to be a hospital outside of Udaipur. Bade Papa was not for it at all but after many tears and convincing, he agreed. Birla Hospital in Mumbai was a reputable hospital and this was a great opportunity for Akshu. Akshu promised to work hard and not let her Bade Papa regret his decision.

Dr. Sinha passed out papers to everyone with details about who their mentor will be. "Akshara Goenka. Wait. This can't be right. Let me check again." Dr. Sinha looked at the paper and left to talk to someone. He came back after a few minutes. "Dr. Akshara Goenka." Akshu went to him. "You are very lucky. Dr. Abhimanyu Birla has decided to mentor you for the duration of your internship."
