Everything seemed insignificant in the wake of Sirius’ death.
Despite the war raging around her, Anna found herself on the ground as she collapsed - tears in her eyes as she stared into the veil.
She killed Sirius.
Her fault. It was all her fault.
Another person, dead. Because of her.
A small part of her wished she could go into the veil too.
A hand fell on her shoulder, causing her to flinch away violently as she held her wand at the ready - hand shaking as she realized she was looking directly at Lupin.
Friend, not foe.
“Anna,” He said carefully. His expression was solemn.
She stared at him blankly. Did he blame her for what happened? Did he hate her for killing his best friend?
He should.
Carefully, she lowered her wand, half-wondering whether or not Lupin would kill her himself.
Instead, Lupin sighed in relief, helping her up slowly. “We have to go. It’s too dangerous here.”
“Neville-” She winced, remembering his screams. “Neville, Ginny and Luna. Where are they?”
“We’re taking them to safety.” He confirmed.
“Ron and Hermione?”
“They’re in good hands.” Lupin reassured.
“Harry?”
Lupin inhaled sharply. “He’s…he’s looking for Bellatrix. I couldn’t stop him.”
A newfound sense of strength went through her, and Anna managed to bring some feeling back into her legs and fingers as she squeezed her wand. “I have to find him.”
“Anna don’t-” He warned her. “You still have the prophecy - everyone is looking for you. They’ll kill you.”
“And she’ll kill him.” She returned evenly.
“Anna-”
But she was already off - racing to find her brother before she was too late.
Her grip tightened around her wand. Bellatrix was ruthless, she knew that much. She wouldn’t go easy on Harry - and even though she knew her brother was capable of defending himself, talent could only do so much over experience, which was something Bellatrix had plenty of.
Her heart pounded in her ears as she walked through the ministry - head held high and adrenaline rushing through her.
“Bellatrix!” She called out. “I know you’re here.”
Wherever she is, Harry will be.
“And another Potter joins our little chat.”
Anna felt the heat of the spell as she dodged it - shielding herself behind a nearby stone pillar.
“You can’t hide forever, little girl.” Bellatrix taunted. “And you, other itty baby Potter - I thought you were supposed to avenge my dearest cousin?”
“I am!” She recognized Harry’s voice as it reverberated throughout the room. Anna squinted through the darkness, watching as Harry came out of the shadows and pointed his wand. “Crucio!”
She watched as the spell hit Bellatrix square in the chest, catching the witch off-guard as stumbled slightly. Though she didn’t seem in too much pain, not like when Harry had been writhing on the ground at the graveyard, or Neville’s screams of torture.
Bellatrix only laughed. “Never used an Unforgivable Curse before, have you, boy? Righteous anger won’t hurt me for long - you’d need to really want to cause pain.”
Of course. Harry was angry, but she knew that as much as he despised Bellatrix, he had a genuinely good heart.
“Oh believe me. I won’t have any problems.” Anna stepped out of her hiding place, finally able to locate Bellatrix herself. “Crucio.”
She put all her horrible memories into her words - letting her anger out in each syllable.
Anna remembers watching Cedric die in front of her, remembers finding her foster family dead in their living room. Bellatrix’s cold hands, holding her down-
She refuses to be helpless. She will NOT be helpless.
The darkness inside her soul grows.
And she can’t say she minds it.
Anna is not her brother - full of righteousness and valor. She doesn’t care about doing the right thing, not now. Her righteousness is conditional.
Unlike Harry, her strength does not come from having a pure heart. But what she does have is plenty of motivation.
And right now, all she wants is to see Bellatrix burn.
A wicked part of her fills with satisfaction as Bellatrix cries out in agony, dropping to the ground as she screams.
“Anna, stop.”
Bellatrix continues to shriek.
“Anna.”
“What?” She snaps at Harry, who looks at her like he’s seeing her for the first time. Good. Maybe now he won’t underestimate me. “She’s a monster. She deserves pain. She deserves to burn in the deepest darkest pits of hell.”
You’re helpless.
Bellatrix screeches as Anna’s eyes narrow.
The fire inside her burns brighter.
“She doesn’t deserve this,” Harry insists. “Anna. Look at me. This isn’t you. You need to snap out of it.”
She hears him, but she doesn’t want to stop. She never wants to stop. Nothing else mattered in that moment - nothing else but her rage and need to cause pain.
You’re just like him. Voldemort.
The thought is enough to distract her from the spell, crying out a mere moment later when another spell collides with her body - sending herself and her brother across the ground.
Her eyes widen as she looks up.
Voldemort smiles. “I believe you have something I want, Potter.”
