"As you get older..."
Of Japan's four seasons, Spring was her favorite. But it's not because of the scenery; cherry blossoms and clear blue skies were pretty, but they were just nature. What was so special about nature? The sky was blue some days, other days it was grey. The cherry blossoms appeared once the snow melted, then they went away when Summer came along.
This, dear readers, is the mind of a rich, spoiled heiress; simple, subtle beauty was of no interest to her.
So what is it that Yukino enjoys about Springtime? The answer might surprise you -- after all, it's not an answer that you're likely to guess.
What she enjoys about Springtime is the change. The change of the school year, the change of weather and temperature, and sure, the change in scenery. Yukino hadn't always been fond of change, but the biggest change of her life had...well, at the risk of sounding repetitive, it changed that.
Only a week had passed since her first day of high school. The transition from middle school wasn't nearly as big a deal as everyone made it out to be. Maybe that was because Yukino had been in class with the same people all her life, or maybe it was because she had known exactly what she would be walking into.
Heading to Ouran's courtyard, she kept her green eyes on the sky. The thought of going home to her luxurious cloud-like bed was like a dream she couldn't reach. After all, once she was finished with this business, she still had other places to be. Unfortunately.
The note she found in her bag's side pocket said he would be waiting for her. When she made it to where she was asked to go, she found that he hadn't lied. His eyes were as blue as the sky and his black hair flowed in the faint breeze. And, as if he sensed her presence, he turned to look at her.
He smiled immediately. It really was a charming smile -- in fact, she could imagine that many girls would swoon over that smile. But in Yukino's fifteen years, she had been faced with smiles that were far more charming.
Her nature was to be brutally honest. With looks alone, he wasn't anything special.
"You found my note." His smile stayed present as he watched her approach him. "I'm glad -- I wasn't sure you would."
She almost hadn't. If it wasn't for a certain pair of nosy twins pointing it out, she wouldn't have shown up.
"I read what you said." Yukino smiled gently. "The things you wrote were really kind -- "
"I meant every word." Cutting her off, he took one step closer to her. "I-I think your eyes sparkle brighter than any emerald in existence! And your hair -- it reminds me of my favorite chocolate that my mother flies in from France! And then there's your voice, it's the sweetest melody in the world -- I could listen to it all day!" He grasped both her hands. "I can't imagine ever feeling this strongly about anyone else!"
