Here's the thing; the problem with writing a fic based on the manga is the fact that the manga ignores all concepts of time.

"Hey!" Tamaki pointed indignantly. "Are you criticizing the original author Bisco Hatori's work?!"

Not uncrossing her arms, Yukino stomped on his foot. "It's not criticism, you idiot. The author's only pointing out the inconvenience."

I'm just saying; I love the manga but it goes from Spring to Summer like four different times.

"That's because Hatori wanted to ignore the graduations so Honey-senpai and Mori-senpai could stay regular characters in the story." The twins shrugged. "It doesn't make sense, but who says it has to?"

Haruhi sweatdropped. "You would think it should, though..."

Honey beamed. "The author had to make a choice between skipping parts of the manga or putting in extra effort to change things and match the regular order of seasons!"

"A lot of the parts that weren't in the anime are parts that she doesn't want to skip, such as the part about r̶e̶d̶a̶c̶t̶e̶d̶." Yukino pointed out. "So, she decided the safest bet to make was to just follow the manga and ignore season changes. She's not gonna put any extra effort so just pretend like it's completely normal."

...You don't have to make me sound so lazy.

June: a month of warmth and rain. A month without any holidays to look forward to. A month of exams.

Now that they were over, Yukino felt good about leaving her books in her bag to not be touched for another month. She had been confident with her score ever since she put down her pencil upon finishing the test. She thought she would be able to relax until summer break began.

Of course, she should have known how stupid that thought was.

It all started when the first-years' midterm results were posted.

Midterm Results for First-Years

1. Kazukiyo Soga

2. Yukino Suoh

3. Haruhi Fujioka

4. Momoka Kurakano

5. Kaoru Hitachiin

6. Hikaru Hitachiin

7. Keiichi Kadomiya

8. Sorano Hayashi

You see that third name? It's the one that precipitated this chapter's conflict.

"What?! Haruhi, you didn't make first place?!"

Standing there in front of her clubmates, Haruhi seemed oddly -- though still unsurprisingly -- unfazed. "Nope, I guess not."

At Ouran Academy, classes are divided based on a few different factors. Considering what kind of school it is, you can probably guess that some of those factors are lineage, family wealth, and family influence. That said, grades are not an unimportant contributor.
