For simplicity, the events of Volume one of RWBY happened somewhere in the year of 2007 in their world, don't ask why, I just realized they never really establish a proper standard of time in the show.
Weiss Schnee was currently in the library. Now, nothing was awfully unusual about that, it was greatly expected for one of her status to diligently study, as a way to keep her standing as one of the smartest in the class. However, Weiss was not studying, she was hiding. Today was the day of the Beacon Faculty War.
For a little background, Beacon Academy hosted many events form time to time, such as the Vytal festival, Parent's Day, and many others. The faculty war was one, if not the most infamous among them, and was hosted around the end of the second semester. It started when a particularly hot-shot student, who was too big for his britches, thought it would be a good idea to challenge one of the professors years ago. He thought it would be a good idea to do so as a way to not only bolster his own popularity, but as a way to prove once and for all that he was the best fighter in the school. Said student was now still recovering in a hospital, and relearning how to walk due to his paralysis.
Headmaster Ozpin, who started the job only a few months prior, saw a genius opportunity that made itself present. As a way to judge the student's progress in combat against a number of highly trained and certified individuals, and also to relieve stress, he commissioned a sort of Student vs Teacher exercise. Fourth years were exempt for obvious reasons, and third years were allowed to not participate if they so choose to, but many around that time were conducting their scheduled exams, so that left only the freshman and sophomores, the least experienced and barely functioning sections of the student body.
Yep, it was a massacre, for the teachers.
Turns out giving hormonal teenagers with weapons of mass destruction, real life superpowers, and a shitload of caffeine and sugar, ended up with a pretty much unstoppable wave of destruction and vandalism. While the esteemed faculty of Beacon academy were certainly literal Demi-gods in the way they fought, the students far outnumbered and were not informed of such concepts such as the Geneva convention. So pretty much every year, the teachers would get steamrolled. There were some exceptions, such as the great schism of 1987, and the Nexus Nebula Catastrophe of 1993, but the students were almost always assured a guaranteed chance at victory.
That was until Professor Y/N L/N joined beacon.
Rumors of his absolute decimation of the legendary Pyrhha Nikos were spread all around campus, and his chaotic nature during his chemistry lectures, were both deemed somewhat truthful, and eventual fact once everyone met him at least once. His mannerism, his clothing, hell, even his weapon differed greatly from prior teachers. it wasn't that he was exceptionally stranger than them, but that he was abnormally normal. he seemed like this regular citizen who specialized in keeping secrets.
So despite their huntsmen training, the students though he would be easy pickings. A group ambush, a few explosives, and he would be taken out of the game.
Oh how wrong they were.
Port, Oobleck, Peach, and even Glynda Goodwitch eventually fell to the hands of their vicious wards, but L/N still stood. Nothing worked, no amount of ammunition, planning, or bribery brought out the desired outcome, either the surrender or defeat of Professor L/N. There were horror stories among the ranks, survivors who had taken a slight glimpse of his malice struck with PTSD, it was as if the dark brother himself walked the earth. And what was the worse part?
A crowbar, he did it all with a single, rusted, crowbar.
No Dust, no mecha-shift, no semblance (that they knew of), Just a fucking crowbar.
Eventually fear grew into resentment, and resentment into chaos, and chaos into anger. Why was this single man, a glorified civilian in a fucking suit, kicking their asses? He was a teacher, sure, but he was just one guy. With enough muscle and manpower, surely he would fall like the rest? So thats what they did, the ignorant ones anyway. They lured Y/N into a trap, and out sprung every second and first year he didn't deal with prior, almost nine dozen strong.
And they were fucking obliterated.
It was as if their aura made a negligible difference, as each student, regardless of race, size, or strength fell to the crowbar. Nora was sent off the plateau entirely and wasn't seen for several days. Coco's legs were broken, Yang's hair was almost ripped out of her scalp, Dove started seeing doves once part of his skull was caved in.
There was a rule against maiming and general lethal shots, but with aura healing involved and access to the infirmary being wide open, it was seen as more of a guideline, and Y/N took full advantage of that. Every injury he inflicted upon the helpless teens was borderline life threatening. Of course all the victims made it out fine, but the pictures, they looked like they came straight out of the great war.
So bringing it back, Weiss Schnee was not in the library for educational purposes, but rather cowardly ones. Once the mayhem erupted, and all hope seemed lost, Weiss decided to bolt for her life while she still had one. Screams and wails echoed throughout the hallways of the academy, with a hint of maniacal laughter that somehow bled through despite the volume. But it was ok, she was safe, Weiss was alive.
However, it would seem that the veil of safety wouldn't last for long, as one by one, the voices, the cries, started simmering down. The halls grew quiet, and an eerie silence encompassed the library. Today was the last day of the games, if she could just hold out a little longer, then the competition would presumably end in a draw. Weiss let out a sigh of relief, it would all be over soon.
Y/N:"Really? Hiding in a place known for being quiet and you start making noise? I honestly expected better from you Weiss."
Weiss jumped away, Myrtenaster in hand, instinctively raised toward her lone adversary. It was impossible, He should have made a sound, any sound at all!! The opening of a door, or a window, even the sound of his steel toed boots that went horribly with the rest of his attire should have slightly clunked against the hardwood floor!!! This was it, if she didn't act now, then she would be given another scar, one probably twice the size of her already prominent one.
Weiss:"Look! I surrendered!! See? No need to fight me. You have surely claimed victory already, Just let me go, and you can win."
Y/N snorted, and then broke out into laughter. that damn laugh, it brought dread and sorrow to all who heard it. To perceive it in anyway, was seen as an omen of death, as those who heard it were never seen again. And here was Weiss, hearing it in all of its glory face on.
Y/N:"Oh Weiss, I thought you of all people should know, students can't surrender, only teachers can."
Weiss grew pale, well, paler than she already was. He was right. Due to it being a teaching lesson at heart, the students were tasked with finding any way out of a dangerous situation. Surrender was not an option, because surrender in the real world, be it to grimm or criminals, meant certain death. As such, students were required by the rules to keep fighting no matter what, or else they would automatically fail.
Was it mentioned that students were being graded on this? Cause surprisingly yes, they were. Looks like many of the students at beacon would be assigned extra credit work in the near future, and a second round of exams were to be in order.
Weiss:"Fuck my life."
The last thing Weiss saw before she blacked out was a red and grey pole swinging at her head.
