WAKING UP TO THE PHONE RINGING WAS NOT PLEASANT. Especially if you were as late as the Henderson kids seemed to be.
Rushing to her brothers room, Sam burst in, waking him with a start.
"Get up Dust. I think we're late." She said as she rubbed the sleep from her eyes. Shuffling to the phone next, the teen picked it up. "Hello?" Her voice was groggy with sleep.
"Hey, Sam?" Jonathan's frantic voice greeted her. Almost instantly, Sam's tiredness was ripped from her.
"Johnny? What's wrong?" She stood up straighter.
"Uh, did Will stay over by any chance?" He asked shakily.
"No? He was headed to your place last I saw him. Did he not get home?" Sam glanced behind her when the floorboards creaked.
"I don't- I don't know." Johnathen sighed. "I wasn't home and-"
"Hey, don't worry man. I'm sure he just went to school early. You know he likes to study in the quiet." Sam cut him off reassuringly. "Okay? I'll meet you there?"
"Yeah, yeah. Bye Sam." Johnathen mumbled before hanging up the phone.
"What? What is it?" Dustin asked when Sam didn't say anything.
"Nothing, keep getting ready. I don't think we'll have time for breakfast this morning." Sam smiled slightly and ushered the boy to his room. Sam sighed and ran a hand down her face before rushing to get ready. She pulled on a pair of light wash, straight leg jeans, a raglan baby tee, and her typical dark boots. She then quickly snatched her book bag, skate board, and corduroy beige jacket.-
WHILE RIDING TO SCHOOL, THE HENDERSONS MET UP WITH MIKE AND LUCAS.
"That's weird." Mike said when he and the other boys put their bikes up, Sam shifting her board under her arm.
"I don't see him." The Wheeler boy continued.
"Im telling you, his moms right." Lucas calmed their nerves. "He probably just went to class early again."
"Yeah, he's always paranoid Gursky's gonna give him another pop quiz." Dustin tried to lighten the mood.
"Step right up, ladies and gentlemen." A boyish voice said from behind the group. Sam rolled her eyes, knowing just who it was. She was only still walking with them because of these boys.
"Step right up and get your tickets to the freak show." Troy and his buddy, James, walked towards Sam's boys, not even noticing the taller girl to begin with.
"Who do you think would make more money in a freak show? Midnight, Frogface, or Toothless?" The bully punched the boys shoulders as he mocked them. James feigned thinking about it.
"I'd go with toothless." He mimicked Dustin's faint lisp.
"Hey, rocks for brains," Sam made her presence known. "Fuck off while you still can." She told them with a innocent smile, her hands stuffed in her jacket pockets.
"Oh yeah, or what?" They laughed. Sam just had to lurch forward and they both jumped back.
"Or else I'll kick your ass. Go on, don't you have a class to fail?" Sam waved them off. The two bullies glanced at each other before speed walking away. Sam huffed as she shook her head
"Thanks Sam." Lucas sighed in embarrassment.
"No problem." The blonde shrugged. "Oh, hey, I gotta go find Johnny. See you guys later!" She glanced at Mikes watch before waving.
"Oh, is it make out time?" The boys mocked. Sam just sent them a finger as she continued away from the middle school.
"Man, you have a cool sister, Dustin." Lucas chuckled to himself as he walked towards their building.
"I know." The Henderson boy said with a proud smile. As she got closer to the entrance of the high school, Sam put her Walkman headphones over her ears. Hitting play, Bennie and the Jets by Elton John blasted to a start. The Henderson girl nodded her head with the beat as she walked to her locker and gathered the books she would need for the day. Passing the school sluts, Tommy H and Carol, she held her head high. Ignoring the look she got from the redhead. The two of them always picked on the Henderson teen, mocking her for her choice in clothing and the way she did her makeup. In response, Sam just turned the level up, dressing more and more like herself and making her eyeshadow and liner bolder and bolder. They could laugh all they wanted, the boys always said the way she looked was awesome, and that's all Samantha Henderson cared about.
Deciding that now would be the best time, Sam walked towards the bathrooms. She didn't want to wait and have to ask in the middle of class, god forbid she miss anything and fail her tests. Pushing on the door gently, Sam stops short when she sees Nancy Wheeler and Steve Harrington making out. Their bags forgotten on the tiled floor.
"Seriously? Jesus it's not even 9 o'clock." The Henderson girl rolled her eyes and turned, walking away as the bell finally rang. High school sucks balls, that much was true.-
PEACEFULLY TAKING NOTES IN CLASS, SAM GLANCED UP AT THE RANDOM INTERRUPTION. Standing at the now open classroom door, was the principal.
"Hello, sorry to bother. Samantha Henderson, can you come with us?" The man asked. Sam glanced over his shoulder noticing Chief Jim Hopper behind him.
"Oh...yeah." Sam nodded quickly as she shoved all her things in her bag. Standing up, the girl swung her bag over her shoulder, very aware of the curious and prying eyes of her peers. Some even turned and whispered to their friends.
"I guess they finally found her cult stuff." Carol loudly laughed. Sam, in retaliation, knocked the girls open water bottle over. It spilled all over the redhead who stood up quickly. Some kids in the class even laughed at her. The blonde turned, sending the girl a wink.Once outside, Sam silently followed the men as they walked her out of the high school building and towards the middle school.
"Where are we going?" She finally spoke up, arms instinctively crossing over her chest.
"We have to get your brother and his friends." Hopper said vaguely. The teens eyebrows furrowed. What could they have done? Nothing that would require the police, she hoped.
Dustin, Mike, Lucas, and their science teacher, Mr. Clark, we're standing in the AV room when Sam looked in.
"Sorry to interrupt, but, uh, may I borrow Michael, Lucas, and Dustin?" The principal knocked on the open door lightly.
The boys walked into the hall and when they saw Sam, they rushed over to her. Standing as close as they could, the boys stared at the police men in confusion. The blonde girl glanced around at them, noticing the unaccounted boy.Following quietly, the group arrived to the front office next. The three boys squished together on a small couch, Sam sitting on the armrest. Almost immediately, the boys began talking over each other loudly.
"Okay, okay, okay." Hopper sighed as he and a deputy sat in front of them. "One at a time, alright? You." He pointed to Mike, the boy nodded in acknowledgement. "You said he takes what?"
"Mirkwood." Mike answered quickly and confidentially.
"Mirkwood?" Hopper repeated. Mike nodded again. "Have you ever heard of 'Mirkwood'?" The chief looked to his deputy.
"I have not. It sounds made up to me." The man shook his head.
"No, it's from Lord of the Rings." Lucas said as if it was obvious.
"Well, The Hobbit." Dustin corrected swiftly with a glance to his friend. Jim and his deputy blinked slowly in annoyance.
"It doesn't matter." Lucas shrugged.
"He asked!" Dustin defended.
"'He asked'!" The Sinclair boy mocked.
"Shut up, guys." Mike tried to calm them down but they began to argue again.
"Hey, hey, hey!" Hopper sat forward. "What'd I just say? One at a damn time. You." This time the man nodded to the oldest of the group.
"Mirkwood is a real road, it's just a made up name." Sam spoke calmly, even as she fidgeted with the rings across her fingers. "It's where Cornwallis and Kerley meet."
"Yeah, alright. I think I know that..." Hopper looked to his partner.
"We can show you, if you want." The Wheeler boy piped back in.
"I said that I know it!" Hopper's voice rose.
"Hey, no need to get loud. We just want to help look for our friend." Sam furrowed her eyebrows at the man.
"Excuse me?" Hopper looked at the girl before huffing. "No, after school, you are all to go home. Immediately. That means no biking around looking for your friend, no investigating, no nonsense." He told them. "This isn't some Lord of the Rings book."
"The Hobbit." Dustin reminded quietly.
"Shut up!" Lucas smacked the boys leg.
"Hey!" The Henderson boy slapped his friends arm.
"Stop it!" Mike joined in the flinging limbs.
"Boys, quit." Sam muttered firmly, instantly halting the boys in their fight. They each folded their hands together, staring down at them.
"Do I make myself clear?" Hopper leaned forward again. When the party didn't answer, the chief stood and stepped towards them. "Do I make myself...clear?" He repeated.
"Yes, sir." Dustin and Mike nodded.
"Yeah." Lucas mumbled. Hopper then looked to Sam.
"Whatever you say, Sheriff." She sarcastically saluted. When he turned, her salut morphed to the bird.chapter two
