Saying she was scared wouldn't fully capture the extent of her fear.

She was finishing up her final training session for the day when she got a surprise phone call. Her sister rarely contacted her unless there was a serious matter at hand.

Now, don't get her wrong, Mackenzie absolutely 𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐬 her sister. She'd always wished she had two. And her wish was granted a couple years back when Meredith called to tell her about their "long lost sister". "Her name's Lexie, short for Alexandra. She's 24 so she's obviously younger..." she remembered her sister saying.

Part of Mackenzie was estatic, but another part of her was hot with anger. Why was she mad? She was mad because her father had an affair 𝐚 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫 after she was born.

Then there was also the fact that her father didn't even love her. He and her mother stopped talking to her after they found her and her first girlfriend together in her bedroom. They never spared a glance her way until he and Ellis decided to send her to a conversion camp out East. But that's a story for another time.

But when she flew out to Seattle that week and finally met her new big sister, she loved her. They spent the whole week together. Mackenzie and Lexie were two peas in a pod. They did everything together in that one week. Even Meredith came with.

Mackenzie flew the three of them out to California for a sister-cation. Lexie had the most fun because she was with her two sisters. The two younger siblings definitely bonded over the short period of time they got to spend together. So when Mackenzie got called back into training, they were dejected.

And she couldn't shake the feeling of this phone call being about Lexie or Meredith. One of them surely had to be dead.

"MACK!!" yelled a voice sucessfully snapping the blonde out of her thoughts.

She turned to face her bestfriend and mumbled a "What Lenny?"

"Are you going to answer that or are you just gonna let the shit ring? 'Cause if you're just gonna let it ring, put it on silent for god's sake." Selene bit back.

Selene Ramirez. Bestfriend to Mackenzie. They'd met during the very first day of training a few years back. She went through some similar things in her childhood just like Mack. They bonded over that. They understood each other in ways no others could. They were each others person.

"I'm scared Len. What if it's not even them calling? What if it's the medical examiners office? Or what if it's worse. What if it's Richard calling me?!" Mack said raising her voice by the second.

Selene wore a confused look on her face. "Why would the M.E be calling you? Or Richard for that matter?" she asked before her face dropped into one of realization. "You think they're dead don't you?"

Mackenzie nodded slowly, eyes filling with hidden tears. "Either one of them or both of them. Whatever it is, it's bad because the last time Meredith called me was when their friend George died."

Selene looked at her bestfriend before rolling her eyes and getting up to go over to her bed. She sat on the end of the blondes bed and stared blankly at her. She held open her arms to Mackenzie.

Mackenzie blinked. "What the hell are you doing?"

Selene huffed before pulling the younger woman into a hug. "I'm hugging you. Shut up and enjoy it because I won't be doing it again anytime soon."

Mackenzie sat there in her persons arms. They both were never really touchy-feely people unless it was someone they liked. She melted into her bestfriends hold she stared at the phone as it rang and rang.

"Mack," Selene started. "Answer the fucking phone or I'll shove it down your throat." she threatened as she made her hold on her friend tighter with each word.

"Okay, fine, get off of me." Mackenzie grunted as she pushed the smirking brunette off of her with an eye roll. She took a deep breath and hesitantly picked up the phone. She put it up to her ear.

"Hello?"

"𝘏𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘰? 𝘔𝘢𝘤𝘬𝘦𝘯𝘻𝘪𝘦?" The voice on the phone questioned. She immediatly recognized this voice.

"Mer," she let out in relief into the phone. When she got no answer she furrowed her brows. "Mer? Mer what's wrong?"

"𝘔𝘢𝘤𝘬𝘪𝘦," Meredith started. Mackenzie's heart dropped to the pit of her stomach. Her sister had used the childhood nickname she came up with for when she comforted her.

𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝.

"What is it Meredith?" Mack bit back quite harshly. She hadn't meant to, but Meredith was scaring her and needed to know what was going on. Selene was looking at her person from afar with worried eyes.

"𝘐𝘵'𝘴 𝘓𝘦𝘹𝘪𝘦..."
