Chapter 1

At exactly 3 p.m., the plane should have landed in New York. You would have been picked up by Happy, your bodyguard and chauffeur, and taken to the new Avengers compound. You'd have unpacked your things and made a schedule for the next few days. Instead, the three of you stand outside the airport at 5.38 p.m. It's raining in torrents and Happy's still not here.
"JN, please calm down, we'll be home soon." Your mom caresses you lovingly over the head and moves a little further under the sparse cover of the airport entrance with her large suitcase.

Silently you plan the rest of your day in your head.
Okay, so let's assume Happy will be here in about ten minutes, like he promised dad on the phone. We need about twenty minutes from the airport to the compound, if you add the possible afternoon traffic jams, it would be about twenty-five to thirty minutes at most. Following, we would finally be there around 6 p.m. This means that I still have almost exactly four and a half hours to unpack my things, look at the study material for Monday and then sit down somewhere with my book. I can still get to know the others tomorrow.

"Happy still has an urgent meeting to take care of, so he probably won't be able to pick us up."
"Great." Groaning, you slide your backpack off your shoulder and dig out your novel between your tissues and your drawing pad. Pride And Prejudice is written in golden letters on the flowered cover. You've already read the book twice but no one cares if you read it a third time. You lean against your suitcase and open your book.
"Although, Happy said he'd send someone to pick us up.", Tony adds.
"Hmm." You make a disinterested sound, already fully immersed in Elizabeth and Darcy's world. The minutes pass and it gets noticeably cooler. You could get your jacket out of your backpack but you just don't want to put down your book.

If it gets even colder, I'll get it out right away, you promise yourself. More minutes pass and in the background your hear the faint sound of approaching car tires. Since that's not unusual at an airport, you don't even look up from your book.
"Hey nerd.", says a deep voice you know all too well.
