* At the diner*Alejandro and Athena should be coming in soon. Honestly, it feels great having help in the diner.
I remember what my life used to be like when I worked for my dad.
For as long as I can remember my dad wasn't the nicest. He was abusive, especially to my mother. He would take his anger out on her every chance he had. As a child he didn't hit me, however if I tried to intervene while he was hurting my mother he would tie me down to a chair and force me to watch the things that he did to her. My mother never spoke badly about my father though. She claimed that she loved him and there was a time when he loved her too, she blamed his behavior on the fact that he ran a gang.
He and my mother immigrated from Korea to start a life in America. For the first few years, they struggled. While my father went to law school my mom had to work a lot to support my father's education. When she got pregnant with me she couldn't work anymore so my dad resorted to illegal activities to support us and his education. That's when he started turning into a monster.
He was a gang leader and a majority of my childhood was spent training and learning the ins and outs of the gang. The first time I killed someone was when I was 12. I still remember the sound of this middle-aged man blubbering like a baby begging for his life.
My father put up a front to hide the fact that he was a gang leader. The public saw my dad as a talented lawyer who was also a family man. That couldn't be farthest from the truth. He used his connections in law to pay off the police and get away with whatever he wanted. In my senior year of high school, I was supposed to take over the gang. I'd never liked the things my father's gang did. They owned human trafficking rings and sold drugs and a lot of other illegal things. But regardless I put up with everything to make sure my mother was safe because to keep me in line my dad would threaten to hurt my mom. On the day I was supposed to be named the new leader, there was a test I had to pass. I didn't know what the test was until the day of.

*flashback*"The momentous day has finally arrived, tonight my son, William, is finally taking over the gang", my dad announced proudly.
Cheers erupted through the crowd of men watching and they died down as my father began to speak again.
"My son has worked hard to get to the point but there is one more test to assure that he is strong enough to become the new leader", his voice is dripping with anticipation.
He turned and nodded at one of our members. He whispered something into the headset that he was wearing.
A woman with a sack over her head is escorted in by two grunts. They kneeled her down in front of me and the sack was removed revealing the woman.
My eyes bulge out of my head when I realize that the woman is my mother. I turn around and stare at my dad with a pleading look.
I know what the test is.
"Your test is to kill your beloved mother to prove your devotion", he says with a smirk on his face.
He hands me a gun. Tears are brimming in my eyes but I refuse to let them fall. The gag is removed from her mouth and she locks eyes with me.
A tear manages to fall as I look at the state she is in. I quickly wipe it away. She looks up at me and forms a small smile before mouthing the words, "I love you".
I aim the gun at her head and she squeezes her eyes shut waiting for me to fire.
I can't.
Without warning I quickly turn and shoot my dad in the shoulder and I grab my mother and run.
In a few moments the warehouse that we were in turned into a shoot-out. I rush me and my mom behind a wall and start shooting at people.
I turn to my mom and whisper, "It's going to be ok, we will get out of this".
I take a peek from behind the wall looking for an exit. About twenty feet away from us is a door. I turn and look at my mom.
" You see that door over there?"
She nods frantically, "On my signal run there as fast as you can while I cover you".
I reach for a machine gun that's a few feet away from me and I get up and start continuously shooting in my enemy's direction.
"GO", I yell and my mom runs to the door and leaves.
I get back behind the wall, my heart rate slowly decreasing knowing that my mom is now safe. We continue to shoot at each other when a loud voice yells.
"Stop".
Slowly the shooting dies down. I recognize my father's voice so I get up from behind the wall. His face twists in pain because of his bleeding shoulder where I shot him.
I notice that he has my mom in a chokehold with a gun pressed to her head.
"I knew with you were too weak to do what needed to be done. It's all her fault for babying you all your life", he says.
I drop my gun and hold my hands out, " Dad please let her go, she didn't do anything wrong this isn't fair"
" Well son, life's not fair," he says pulling the trigger and shooting my mom in the head.
It's like life was moving in slow motion as I watched her lifeless body hit the floor.
I felt numb and empty, the only person I had to live for was now gone forever.
My attention is brought back to my dad.
"I'm sorry things had to be like this but I'm just trying to make you stronger and she was the only thing holding you back", he says.
Once he said that I felt a wave of rage. I wanted to kill him right this second but I knew that with all of his grunts in the room, I wouldn't get far.
I just walked towards my mom picked up her lifeless body and left.
*flashback finished*

That was the last time I saw my dad. After putting my mother to rest I gathered as much cash as I could and ran.
At the time I wasn't sure where I was going but I knew that I couldn't stay with my dad. For a while, I was moving from place to place trying to make sure my dad wouldn't find me.
I knew that I would eventually run out of money so I decided to settle down. I found this diner on sale for cheap in the middle of nowhere in El Paso, Texas, and bought it.
I've been here ever since.
