Week Five: Names and Numbers

It was the next week before I saw the doctor. Dr Anthony was a young woman, newly qualified. She calculated that I was only five weeks pregnant, gave me a bunch of booklets and leaflets to bring to various sessions and explained that there really wouldn't be much to see, explaining that it was the size of an apple pip, but she showed me anyway. I could see a small, dark blob, and only one, thank God.
"Zoe, that's our baby." Alfie said, staring at the pictures on the way home.
"I know. Ours. Baby Deyes... My son." I whispered.
"I think it's a girl." Alfie contradicted.
"I'm the one with hormones and morning sickness. Don't argue." I said sternly.
I parked in our drive and unlocked the front door. The second I stepped into the kitchen I pinned my scan photos on the fridge.
"Would you like some strawberries?"
"Why strawberries?" Alfie asked.
"Because the cravings are setting in, Daddy Deyes. Strawberries are my current longing. Take five, no more."
Alfie picked up Nala, hugging her tightly. "Mummy's gone crazy." He said, cuddling her. "Daddy's going to fix it. What do you think we should call your supposed brother?"
Nala barked.
"Good suggestion, but I think it's a little too canine." Alfie muttered in my ear.
"Louise gave me this. It's a names book. Pick a boy's name from each letter and write it down."
