Montana's POV
That night with Zeus, it's quiet in a different way. It's not an angry kind of quiet, it's just that he's sitting on one end of the couch reading a book with his glasses on, wearing a white tee and gray sweatpants, and I'm on the other, in a gray tee shirt and pink sweat shorts. I'm rereading one of my favorite books with Millie asleep beside me.
I occasionally look up at him, and I know he's doing the same at me. "Millie" he says after a few seconds when she jumps up and makes her way over to him as I smile behind my book.
"You love her." I tell him as he rubs her back and she cuddles into his big thigh. "I just wanted to see if it'd work. You've been replaced." He tells me sitting his book down and taking the glasses off. He holds her into his arms as I sit my own book down and adjust on the couch to throw the blanket over my bare legs.
"Why didn't you ever get a pet for company?" I ask him as I lean back on the pillows a bit staring over at him.
"I've never had one, never wanted one." He tells me back as I smile. "But Millie's different right?" I ask as he smiles.
"I guess so," he answers back. "What's the book about?" He asks looking at the pink covered book in my hands.
"It's a romance novel." I whisper to him as he sighs. "Chicks and romance," he mumbles as I throw a pillow at him scaring Millie a bit but to make him laugh.
"Shut up, I like to read about relationships." I tell him as he nods. "And you like to read about boring business blah blah blah, it's like you live under a rock Zeus. You don't have any friends to hang out with? Or party once in a while?" I ask him as he rubs Millie.
"I choose not to put myself around ignorance and most of the people I meet are ignorant." He tells me. "What about as a child? Even then?" I ask him.
"Believe it or not, I played sports in high school so I had a large group of friends, until I went to college and my father drilled into my head that running the company was my future. He made me give up hockey in college, I was a state champion." He mumbles out.
"I hate that. Looking back now do you think that was his intention of trying to do his best for you? Or do you think it was selfish in a way?" I ask him.
"A little of both, but when he passed I had to be ready for everything. So it kind of made since in a way." He tells me rubbing Millie in his arms.
"Do you mind if I asked what happened to him?" I whisper as he glares over. "If it makes you uncomfortable don't get mad just say no and I won't ask again." I insist as he sighs.
"He had a heart attack in the office, well my office now, he sent me here actually told me that I'd done a lot for the day and that he was proud of me. Said he'd be over in an hour for dinner after he finished up some things because he knew I wanted to hit the gym. I got worried after he didn't show up for two hours, called Charles to go into his office and check on him. He found him, I rewatched the cameras and he suffered. He sat in the floor holding his chest for thrifty minutes before he passed. What a great fucking son huh?" He asks putting Millie down. My heart breaks for him, no wonder he's so cold.
"I'm sor-" I go to start when he cuts me off. "Don't pity me. I'm a grown man." He starts as I stand up and move over sitting next to him whether he likes it or not.
"Well I am sorry, I don't pity you. I'm sure he didn't deserve that and you didn't deserve to lose your father." I tell him as I throw my blanket over his body and sit beside him. He looks over at me as I lean back on the couch and watch his face.
"So you haven't really made friends in the city then? Even though you've lived here your entire life?" I ask him as he sighs.
"I guess when you put it that way, not really." He answers back. "Me either. Except for Jean. She's a hoot to be around." I tell him as he sighs.
