Wilbur looked around warily.
There had been a creak somewhere near him. And a rustling of leaves. Which isn't too abnormal unless you're in the middle of the woods in the middle of the night and you may or not be lost.
Also not to mention the giant abandoned mansion standing a few meters away.
Wilbur sighed and shrugged his shoulders, heading towards the massive house. I mean, what's the worst that could happen? He'd only stay for a night, no longer.
Maybe he could get service too.
He pushed open the heavy doors, their rusty hinges making an awfully high pitched squeal that rang out across the lobby.
Wilbur looked around in awe. He had never been in such a large, magnificent place. He was too awestruck to notice the door close behind him, or the thing lingering at the top of the ceiling watching him.
Its white eyes flickered around, watching his every movement, even slight ones. It drifted down a little bit, to the top of the staircase so it could look down on him.
Suddenly Wilbur bumped into a vase and it fell, shattering into millions of pieces on the ground. A piercing glass sound rang throughout the lobby, hurting Wilbur's eardrums.
"Shit..", he muttered, sweeping the broken vase to the side under the table it was previously on with his foot, ignoring the mess he made on the dusty floor (that sounds so wrong, i'm sorry).
He then felt the weird presence of someone- something else there with him. It didn't feel quite human, but there was definitely something there.
And it was totally watching him.
His eyes flicked around the large room, finally resting on a slightly transparent figure at the top of the grand staircase.
Its eyes.. they freaked him out more than anything. But there wasn't evil in those eyes. There was.. kindness, and curiosity.
It blinked, but didn't move, its eyes still on him.
Wilbur moved towards it cautiously, edging his way over to the stairs. He stepped up each one carefully, acting as if the slightest wrong movement would send the whole place tumbling down.
He soon reached the top stair, standing on the same level as the other thing.
It seemed almost.. ghost like.
'What if it is a ghost?', Wilbur wondered as he looked the half transparent figure up and down, inspecting it.
"You act like you've never seen a ghost before", it said, confirming Wilbur's suspicions. It had a quiet, echoey voice.
"I.. I haven't", Wilbur replied, looking deep into it's snow-white eyes. They were lifeless, yet full of life all the same.
"Well, it's nice to meet you then. I'm Schlatt", the ghost said. Wilbur smiled. He didn't seem scary at all.
"I'm Wilbur", he introduced, sticking out his hand. Schlatt just stared at it blankly.
"You realize if I try to shake your hand you'll phase through me?", Schlatt said, looking up into Wilbur's eyes instead of his hand.
Wilbur felt heat creep across his face from the embarrassment, and he put his hand down.
"Right, right, sorry", he apologized, glancing at the ground.
'How stupid are you? Stupid Stupid Stupid', Wilbur cursed at himself in his head.
He heard a small giggle come from the man in front of him. It was as if he read his thoughts.
"No need to be embarrassed, I guess it's not everyday a human meets a ghost. Ghosts are.. quite lonely..", Schlatt trailed off, a wave of sadness washing over Wilbur from him.
"Well.. maybe if I find a way out of this forest I'll come visit you from time to time", Wilbur smiled as he saw Schlatt's face light up.
"Of course! You would want to get home, wouldn't you..", Schlatt mumbled, gesturing to Wilbur to follow him as he floated down the stairs.
"I'll show you the way out", he said, waiting by the grand front doors.
Wilbur stepped down the stairs in a fast pace, stopping by Schlatt.
"Hey, wait", he said as Schlatt turned towards the door. Schlatt stopped suddenly, turning back to Wilbur, his face slightly alarmed.
"Maybe I could well.. stay here for a little bit before going back..?", Wilbur suggested, looking down at the ground nervously.
"O-oh, yeah if you want!", Schlatt exclaimed, lowering his tone, not wanting to sound so eager. He hadn't had company in so long.
Wilbur smiled, his teeth flashing brightly at Schlatt.
"Great", he said, looking around.
"Now.. why don't you show me around?"
