The doorbell jingles, signifying our entrance. Signs on the wall prohibiting stealing, saying cameras were in use and telling us what brands were on sale plead welcomed me despite their big, bold and scary font.
In the background, SZA played over the speakers as the comforting smell of hair product and lace frontals wafted through the air.
"I'm home!" I say dramatically, throwing my arms out. Ashtray follows me, his eyes soaking in every inch of the store in pure innocence.
"Mia's back y'all!" Suzie, a junior in college greets me. She had a beautiful Afro and always took care of it.
"Mia!" Liang, a short Asian man who deals with the deliveries greeted me in a happy manner. He used to let me unpack boxes I exchange for eco-gel and lashes.
"Hi guys," I smiled, looking up at Suzie considering she was behind the counter. "What's up?"
"The usual," She greets as I watched Liang go to the back room with more boxes. "Who's this?" She raises an eyebrow at Ash who stood protectively behind me.
"Ash," He responds, putting his hand in my back pocket. "Nice to meet you," Suzie sent him a cheesy smile and I could feel her questions coming in any second now. Ash kissed my cheek, sensing I would talk to her for a second and left us alone.
"Girl, you ain't say you had a man yet!" Suzie squeals. "And he's cute!" Suzie was like a cousin to me. She taught me how to cornrow, showed me the ins and outs of leave in conditioners and would help me on my homework when I was a kid.
We watched as Ash roamed through the aisles, carefully picking items up, reading them then setting them back down.
"We just started dating," I sheepishly say. We watch as Ash picked up a basket and pulled out his phone, scrolling through it as he occasionally looked up at the products.
"I should've known you was fuckin with that white chocolate!" Suzie teased, reaching over the counter to lightly push me. I laughed at her, rolling my eyes.
"Just this one," I tell her. "He's the only one I want," I shrug at her, feeling a blush come on as she stared at me, open mouthed.
"Bitch!" She gasped. "You love him, don't you?" My eyes widened at her insinuation.
"Why does everybody keep saying that!" I groan, ignoring her question. "We're only sixteen!"
"Girl, you and I both know love isn't age restricted," Suzie told me, recalling how many times she's spilled to me about ex boyfriends and past college flings.
"Yeah well right now, we're just taking it slow," I assure her. All of a sudden, two full baskets were placed on the counter in front of me. Suzie and I stared in shock and confusion.
There was everything in there that I had been using since birth. Literally all of my go-to's and favorite products were piled in the baskets and almost spilled over the edge.
"What the hell?" I ask, turning towards Ash as he pulled out his wallet. "What's all this?"
"All the shit you use and more," He shrugged, picking up a lip gloss and throwing it in the pile.
"But how'd you know I even used all of this?" I ask, scanning through the products. "This is literally everything I use?"
Suzie, being her nosey self, scanned the items slowly, listening to our conversation. Ashtray held up his phone and showed me his notes app that had a list of all the products I use and pictures of them.
"Ion know," He shrugged, putting the phone back in his pocket. "I saw you use Lexi's shit one day and realized you two got two different hair textures so last time I was at your place, I took pictures,"
