Define Friends

Chapter 5

Collin and Sophia walk all the way from school to the ice cream store on the corner. Collin holds the door open for Sophia. Sophia blushes slightly.

"Thanks Collin."

"No problem."

"Hey Collin?"

"Yes Sophia?"

"Why did you say yes to me?"

"Because we need to find time to work on this project."

"Oh."

"Were there any other reasons why you invited me?"

"No!" Sophia sputters.

Hmmm... it seems like she hesitated on her response. Collin thought.

"Ok, if you say so."

Together they go up and order their ice cream. Sophia gets Oreo and Collin orders vanilla.

Why is he acting like he knows my secret? Sophia wonders while she's waiting for her ice cream. It's like he's able to see right into my mind.

"So, what are we going to do our final project on?" Collin asks.

"Mrs. Wall said that we needed to do our project on love."

"Well since she didn't specify what part about love, I think our project should be on how does one know that they are in love?" He says, grinning.

"Ok?" Sophia responds hesitantly. Confused as to whether Collin knows about her secret already or is trying to get to that secret. Why is he toying with me like this?

"Yeah... I don't think it was the best of ideas." Collin grimaces, noticing Sophia is uncomfortable.

"No, no! It's a great idea, I don't know what to do with it though..."

"Well first, let's go sit down to brainstorm." Collin says.

"Ok."

Collin responds dramatically, "But if you insist, very well." He continues on normally, "I think the project should be about our love-life then. I had a girlfriend... Once. How about you?"

"I have never dated anyone." She looks down at her lap.

"Oh... What now?" He asks, putting on a thinking face.

"Uh I don't know." She says.

"Well, how is that possible for you, you're darn good at ideas... I presume."

"Are you approaching me?" Sophia asks accusingly.

"What? No...?"

"Ok, if you say so."
