The sun rose steadily over Hogwarts, and the Great Hall blazed with life and light. (Y/n) felt exhausted after the night long battle, yet grateful they had won.
He spent most of the morning with Hermione and Ron. Penelope was fast asleep, tired from the chaos of the night before.
He had found Treebeard lying across the hall once the fighting had ended, and had rushed him to Hagrid, who had assured him he would be alright.
"So" Ron said as they sat in the Great Hall.
"It's over isn't it?" Hermione asked, her head resting in (Y/n)ms shoulder.
"I hope so I'm not sure how many time I can keep dying." (Y/n) joked his arm wrapped around Hermione.
"Hey that was pretty good fighting (Y/n)." McGonagall told him as she past limping slightly. "Taking on that many Death Eaters at once, it's a feat most full grown wizards would not be able to achieve."
"Hey I'm more proud I got to take Voldy's hand!" He said pulling a pale white hand out of his arm.
The other three looked at him in stunned silence. "Calm down calm down... I cleaned it first."
"Are you actually going to keep that?" Hermione asked him concerned.
"Nah I just kept it to for the bit." He said throwing it aside.
"Well in any case I'm glad you're safe (Y/n)" Professor McGonagall said before walking away from them.
"Have either of you seen Harry?" Ron asked after a moment of silence.
"I haven't no." Hermione said looking around the hall.
"Don't suppose he's off snogging Ginny do you?" (Y/n) asked.
Ron just shrugged at this. "As long as she's alright with it."
"Wow you've really matured Ron." (Y/n) said, grinning at him.
"What can I say, life's short." Ron said, staring across the room.
"I don't suppose this has anything to do with where you and Lavender disappeared to?" Hermione asked him amused, causing Ron's face to go a deep scarlet.
"Congratulations mate!" (Y/n) said clapping him on the back. "So that just leaves Harry then?"
"Guess so." Ron said, smiling like an idiot.
"Unless that's where he is now." (Y/n) said grinning like a madman.
"It's me," Harry's voice suddenly came from behind them "Will you come with me?"
"Speak of the devil! How was the pipe cleaning mate? Was your wand work alright?" (Y/n) asked him before ducking under the cloak with a laugh.
Ron and Hermione followed quickly after and the four of them left the Great Hall. Great chunks were missing from the marble staircase, part of the balustrade gone, and rubble and bloodstains occurred ever few steps as their climbed.
Somewhere in the distance they could hear Peeves zooming through the corridors singing a victory song of his own composition:
We did it, we bashed them, wee Potter's the one, And Voldy's gone moldy, so now let's have fun!
"Really gives a feeling for the scope and tragedy of the thing, doesn't it?" said Ron, pushing open a door to let Harry, (Y/n), and Hermione through.
Painstakingly Harry recounted what he had seem in the Pensieve and what had happened in the forest, and they had not even begun to express all their shock and amazement, when at last they arrived at the place to which they had been walking, though none of them had mentioned their destination.
Since the last time they were there the entirety of the gargoyle had collapsed joining its head on the ground.
"Can we go up?" Harry asked the gargoyle.
"Feel free," groaned the statue.
"Hey sorry mate, are you alright? Your looking a little down." (Y/n) joked.
"Yes because I'm lying in the floor now haha you're really cracking me up." The gargoyle joked back.
They clambered over him and onto the spiral stone staircase that moved slowly upward like an escalator. Harry pushed open the door at the top.
As they entered the room they were met with an ear splitting racket. All around the walls, the headmasters and headmistresses of Hogwarts were giving them a standing ovation; they waved their hats and in some cases their wigs, they reached through their frames to grip each other's hands.
They danced up and down on their chairs in which they have been painted: Dilys Derwent sobbed unashamedly; Dexter Fortescue was waving his ear-trumpet; and Phineas Niggelus called, in his high, reedy voice, "And let it be noted that Slytherin House played its part! Let our contribution not be forgotten!"
(Y/n) saw that through this all Harry had eyes only for the man who stood in the largest portrait directly behind the headmaster's chair. Tears were sliding down from behind the half-moon spectacles into the long silver beard.
At last, Harry held up his hands, and the portraits fell respectfully silent, beaming and mopping their eyes and waiting eagerly for him to speak. He directed his words at Dumbledore, however, and chose them with enormous care.
Exhausted and bleary-eyed though he was, he must make one last effort, seeking one last piece of advice. "The thing that was hidden in the Snitch," he began, "I dropped it in the forest. I don't exactly here, but I'm not going to go looking for it again. Do you agree?"
"My dear boy, I do," said Dumbledore, while his fellow pictures looked confused and curious. "A wise and courageous decision, but no less than I would have expected of you. Does anyone know else know where it fell?"
"No one," said Harry, and Dumbledore nodded his satisfaction.
"I'm going to keep Ignotus's present, though," said Harry, and Dumbledore beamed.
"But of course, Harry, it is yours forever, until you pass it on!"
"And then there's this."
Harry held up the Elder Wand, and Ron, (Y/n), and Hermione looked at it with a reverence that, even in his befuddled and sleep-deprived state, Harry did not like to see.
"I don't want it." said Harry.
"What?" said Ron loudly. "Are you mental?"
"I know it's powerful," said Harry wearily. "But I was happier with mine. So . . ."
He rummaged in the pouch hung around his neck, and pulled out the two halves of holly tstill just connected by the finest threat of phoenix feather.
He laid the broken wand upon the headmaster's desk, touched it with the very tip of the Elder Wand, and said, "Reparo."
As his wand resealed, red sparks flew out of its end He picked up the holly and phoenix wand and felt a sudden warmth in his fingers, as though wand and hand were rejoicing at their reunion.
"But I don't know what to do with this." He said holding up the Elder wand.
Dumbledore nodded. "I think you know where I stand in this." He said looking at (Y/n).
"Are you serious?" (Y/n) asked looking between Dumbledore and Harry.
"Quite serious (Y/n), I think you would know if I were joking." Dumbledore told him with a wink.
"Feel free to take it mate, that wand's more trouble than it's worth." said Harry. "And quite honestly," he turned away from the painted portraits, "I've had enough trouble for a lifetime."
(Y/n) took the wand from Harry turning it over in his hands. "You may have had enough, but I'm only just beginning!"
