This is going to be an Au that borrows stuff from the Avatar: The Last Airbender show. I don't know how this will turn out. Let me know.

Kidow had long since learned that the Cagasters are pretty much invulnerable to the elements a bender could bend unless they get particularly creative. His father - that asshole that Kidow knows logically raised him through abuse both emotional and physical while optimistically he still thinks of the guy as having raised him the best he could in a world that still holds a grudge against benders, though especially Firebenders and with people that are turned into Bugs - had been an Earthbender who would make the Cagasters eat sand or something of the like and then sharpen the sand into needles and pierce them from the inside out. A lot of the others had been Earthbenders, with a few Airbenders and the occasional Waterbender. 

Kidow is the only Firebender that resided there as far as he knows, but he also knows that if he were to give away his element, he would be hated and targeted for a lot more than just being an Exterminator, so he let everyone think he was simply a non-bender, since it was safer that way. That's not to say he slacks in his bending training, it just means he waits until early morning and late evening, when his flames won't stand out too much against the sunset/rise, or when he's out on missions and camping alone in the desert. (It is a great way to improve his Firebending, since without the sun there, he's having to work harder to get his flames as strong and controlled, as well as a way to stay awake all night so he doesn't get eaten.) 

He's done research on the other Benders as well, along with the few sub classes that are mentioned but not as well known as others. He knows everything he can about Water, Earth, Air, Lava, Blood, Metal and Lightning bending as well as the fact that very few people have the ability to take someone's bending from them. However, he keeps all of that knowledge, just in case, because Exterminators are called for 2 different reasons : to take care of Cagasters and to deal with Benders who have their bending turn against them for whatever reason.  Qasim, for all that he's a loud mouth and passionate, is a Waterbender, rare in the desert where they live but not uncommon. Hadi and Aisha are more special, with the man being a Metalbender and Aisha being a Bloodbender. 

Jin, as annoying as the man is, happens to be a very competent Airbender, and damn good at his job as well. Ms. Mario is a non-bender, though Kidow has a few suspicions that she's just hiding her bending, like he is. Though whether that means its an ace in the hole or she's a Firebender is left to be seen. Illie is an Earthbender, having only known about it for a few short months before she came to their city, so they have Lizzy and Naji help her learn, since they are both Earthbenders. Normally kids their age wouldn't be teaching others, but they've lived in the bad side of town for years, and no one would begrudge them needing self- defense of some sort. 

It's normal for Kidow to be seen patrolling around town, at least when he doesn't have a job and would rather not read one of his books again, so no one questions it when they see him, not bothered by it and having no reason to be. Only Ms. Mario had caught a glimpse  of his clothes, which let's her know he won't be back for hours, what with them not being his usual. He has on a red t shirt,  darker pants that are loose, almost baggy looking, shoes that are thick enough to protect his feet but thin enough for him to feel the ground and any changes in it, and he had not taken anything but his sword, meaning he's doing something else other than Cagasters. 

Ms. Mario is not stupid, she knows that boy isn't a non bender like he tries to pretend, not with the heat he gives off and most certainly not with the way he moves, but she also knows the importance in needing to hide something, so she has no reason or need to give away his secret. It's not putting anyone in danger and so its not something that's ever been needed. She had planned on letting the kid come to her, but circumstances push her hand.
