I stormed into the apartment and slammed the door behind me. I threw my backpack on the ground and stomped to my room. "Carter." Mom lightly knocked on my door. "I got a call from Clare. She's not very impressed and either am I." She spoke sweetly. I didn't say a word. "Carter, just open the door. I have something for you."
That made my eyes open in shock. She has something for me? She never buys me presents. I only get gifts or surprises on my birthday. I usually get stuff to do with school and some clothes, so I opened my door. "What?" My Mom was wearing a red strapless dress down to mid thigh, and a black blazer. She looks and dresses like a twenty year old when she's really thirty eight. Then my eyes landed on the present. A little box with a bow on top, in her hands.
"This is for you." She moved the box towards me. "I have to go to work for a night shift, so have fun and please use this. It well help with your violent feelings." She set the box in my hands and walked away from my door way.
Her heels clicking against the wood floor. "Wait, Mom," I shouted before thinking. Should I say thank you? "I guess I should say thank you."
She shook her head no. "There's no need, Carter. I'm just trying to help you." She grabbed her purse off of the kitchen counter and walked out the door.
"Thank you." I whispered and walked back to my bed. I shut the door behind me. Maybe it's a phone? It it could be a laptop. I couldn't be an electronic. Clare said were--she's having money problems.
I set the box on my bed in front of me and started to slowly open it. I untied the bow and pulled the string away. I slowly opened the top of the box and set it down beside me on the bed. I looked inside and a shiny new phone was staring right back at me. A phone? Wait a minute. A phone?! She can't buy me a phone! Especially an iPhone! I stared at it in aw. She got me an iPhone. But that's not what was all in there. A little book. I set the phone down and picked up the book.
Woah. A diary? She got me a diary? And a phone? I think I'm dreaming. This day can not be real! First, Porter actually talks to me, then Mom buys me an iPhone and a diary. Yep. I'm definitely dreaming. I pinched myself, and I just got a slight bruise. Not a wake up call from Mom to get ready for school. Holy shit. I'm not dreaming.
"I told you so, don't mean to brag but ya already know!" I jumped so high the box cover fell to the ground. I held the phone in my hand and read the text.

Like it? Oh the diary is to let all your feelings out on it. Please use it Carter. It will change your life.
Okay, I'm certainly not dreaming. Did Clare lie? Is Mom really not having money problems? I'll ask Clare on Monday. Wait. Saturday! I can go! If Mom isn't having problems, I can go to the game on Saturday. If only I had Porter's number, I still wouldn't call him. Ha, you try calling the love of your life and tell him the change of plans! It would be embarrassing, especially when he thinks I tried to ditch him!
A lot of what ifs are spinning around in my head right now. I just can't find the answer to any of them! He might like me back, yet he might not! I've never been the relationship kind of person. Why is life so confusing?! I just wanna die in a hole! Life seems to get worse, day by day. I can't handle it anymore!
I stood up from my position on the bed and walked towards the door. I peeked my head out the door for a minute, then made my way to the couch. I took my new iPhone with me. I wanna figure out this thing. I sat down on the couch and flipped my jet black hair to my other shoulder. I switched the tv on, so I don't look like a loner. My iPhone started to ring and I jumped on the air for the second time today. I really have to change this ring tone.

Leave me alone! I'm not a baby anymore! I can write when I wanna write!
The minute I hit that send button, the minute I felt guilty. It sounds kinda harsh when I read it over and over in my head. Is there a way I can stop it from sending?! I hate phones! This is why I didn't want one!

Sorry.. I know you're turning nineteen tomorrow, just don't forget Mom loves you! Have to go to work. Bye.
Yeah, I know. I'm nineteen and still in school. Make fun. I didn't pass grade ten because of my absences. I missed a lot of days. My Mom never knew I skipped school, but I don't care! She made me redo that grade and grade six. I fake sicked a lot in that grade. I also got bad grades in grade six. It was a very rough year. My Dad left my Mom and she went to drugs and alcohol. I never thought about him again until now. Mom went to rehab after a year of doing drugs. I had to live with Gramma. Those weren't the best three months of my life.
I took my Dad's last name because I wanted to remember his name. Some day I might wanna remember him, so I kept his last name. Woodens, Robert Woodens. Carerella Cindy Woodens. My full name. Carter is just a nickname. I never liked my full name. It made me feel like a girly girl. Ew. I've always worn ripped jeans and versity jackets with a W on the front. Stands for Woodens. If I wasn't a Woodens, I wouldn't be in this world right now. I look up to my last name.
