I didn't know what I was expecting when Mirabel said she wanted to celebrate my birthday... but I definitely didn't expect the whole fucking town to be here.
I feel my heart pace as everyone turns to look at me when I enter La Casa Madrigal. I scan the crowd to look for Mirabel, but I spot Isabela first, looking directly at me with an unreadable expression.
I continue to look at her, neither of us backing down to break the staring contest we were in... Until her so-called "perfect" boyfriend starts talking to her.
Once I find Mirabel, I try to make my way to her until my abuelita stops me, intertwining our arms. "Mija, please try to enjoy today. This is all Mirabel wants for you." She whispers so the crowd won't be able to hear her.
I feel my anxiousness start to bubble up as abuelita starts walking, leading me along to take us to the center. I loved avoiding attention, and yet here they are bringing all of it to me.
I look down as I walk, trying to hide all the negative emotions I was feeling at once. Each step I took reminded me of every step my parents took away from me.
Birthdays are overrated. They don't need to be celebrated, especially if most of us never wanted to live in the first place. Bringing us into a place full of pain and misery... humanity should always think twice before bringing people into this world.
My thoughts get interrupted when someone breaks the silence. "Look at her, this is why she doesn't have anyone courting her." One of the boys says not so subtly.
How pathetic. Just because he can't get a woman doesn't mean he has to drag me into his own little pity party.
Abuelita tightens her hold on my arm as she feels me stiffen up beside her. "Ignore them. They don't matter."
I clench my jaw as I continue to look down. "No one else matters except you and Mirabel. I shouldn't be here. There should be no celebration."
The boys start snickering as they murmur to one another. "She pretends she doesn't like anyone, but really, she just can't get anyone to like her."
Another boy nods with them. "If only she was more like Isabela... Man, that body of hers. The taste of her must be amazing, unlike y/n." He laughs proudly.
I feel anger flare in my eyes as I turn to them. Body? Taste of her? He even dares to imagine such lecherous thoughts of her?
Just as I'm about to make my way to punch one of them, Mirabel stops me by the wrist. "Don't. You need to stop getting into fights." She whispers as abuelita holds tightly onto my other arm.
"Oh look, she's angry." They laugh harder as everyone else starts to watch us in silence like they weren't hearing how disgusting they were being. "Don't tell me you're actually a dyke that wants Isabela too?"
As I open my mouth to speak, vines suddenly start dragging them out of the house aggressively. Some of it even throw them out.
I immediately turn to Isabela, fury in her eyes as she instructs Casita to close its doors. Not once has she even come close to looking at me like that, in fact it was probably the first time she ever held true resentment in her eyes.
When tension starts to settle in the atmosphere, Abuela speaks up. "Now, now..." She says as she tries to distract everyone from what just happened. "We gather here today to celebrate the birthday of my best friend's granddaughter, y/n. We all want to wish you a happy birthday. You've become such a wonderful young lady." She says with a smile as she looks at me from across the room.
