Your eyes widen as you examine the petal stained with blood. Isabela had never grown yellow flowers, so it was impossible for her to be the cause. She wouldn't curse you just from a single argument, you were sure she wouldn't go that low. You always had arguments after all.
Worry starts to fill you as the coughing stops when you've let the petal out of your body. Not once had you heard of anyone coughing up flowers. You knew of several different rare diseases because of your abuelita reading about it in curiosity, but this one was totally unheard of.
You disregard the decision of telling her about it, hoping it was a one-time thing since you've calmed down quite shortly. And although it was quick, you could still feel the pain from just seconds ago, as if it were still suffocating you from the inside.
"Is this my punishment for hurting you after you tried to be nice?" You whisper while gripping your chest, making your way upstairs as you feel your body get drained from all the energy you've spent.
Each step you took felt heavier than the last, your eyes giving in slowly to the need for rest. "At least... reach my room." You whisper as you push yourself, your legs giving in when you close the door behind you.
When you open your eyes it was night, lying on your carpeted floor. The moonlight shined through your window as you hear your abuelita come inside from downstairs. You wonder if you could fall back asleep, knowing full well your body clock would be ruined after falling asleep in the afternoon.
Getting up slowly, your head spins for a moment. Going down in a daze, there stood your abuelita with Isabela beside her by the kitchen counter. "Are you sure I'm not imposing, señora?"
"Of course not querida, it's as sorry for y/n leaving you mid-job." She says and turns to find you watching them. She rolls her eyes and smacks the back of your head when she approaches. "Apologize too."
Isabela turns to you before quickly looking away. Seeing her expression reminded you of today's events, taking it as a chance to apologize for offending her as well. You were clueless about how the sudden change between the two of you occurred, but thinking about it made you embarrassed since she took initiative.
Looking away as well, you stroke the back of your neck while you speak with a quiet voice. "I'm sorry for leaving... and if I hurt you with what I said earlier, I'm sorry."
Feeling her gaze on you, you look back at her, the suffocating feeling in your chest fading as she wears a small smile when she nods. "It's alright, Mariano came and helped out before you left anyway." Directing the reassurance to your abuelita.
Your eye twitches at the mention of his name, your chest tightening once again as your abuelita wears a huge smile while the three of you get seated. "My! I'm excited for your engagement. The two of you are just perfect. Don't you think so too y/n?"
"No, I think she could do better." You say, your abuelita shoving you harshly, not noticing the amused smile Isabela was wearing. You smirk at her, she was obviously pleased with your answer.
But you were being honest, you found Mariano quite dense and naive. He may look like a hunk, which the women digged, but there was always more to a person than just their looks. You could tell Isabela shared the same sentiment when choosing a partner.
"Stop being rude." Your abuelita scolds you before getting up and grabbing food, placing it on the table. You stand up as well and grab the plates and utensils, placing them on the table.
Isabela smiles as you help without being asked to. She couldn't stop herself from noticing things she hadn't in the past. Maybe because this was also the first time she was let into your home.
"I'm just speaking the truth. Who cares if he's handsome? Looks won't last and marriage is no joke. You know how I am abuelita." You say as she lets out a sigh in defeat. She could never argue when marriage was brought up, she knew you scorned it like it was some kind of plague. But she understood why.
Isabela watches you as you eat. She noticed you had no interest in romance, but she had no clue as to why. Sure, your parents had abandoned you... but most people learn to cope with that kind of thing by searching for love from those around them. You were the first to ever dismiss the mere mention of love. Surely some part of you had hoped to know the feeling?
She just couldn't imagine it, as someone who wanted to be loved by everyone. Perhaps that was also why she was so drawn to you. You had similarities in personality but you were still polar opposites in values and beliefs.
She found herself wanting to know the things that kept you up at night, what thoughts ran through your mind when you couldn't sleep at 3 in the morning. She wondered if anyone had ever made your heart race despite spurning the thought of love.
She wanted to find out your habits and learn your body language; if you ran your fingers through your hair when you were stressed just like her or bit your lower lip when you were thinking.
She wanted to know your hobbies, what you enjoyed doing, and what got you passionate. She wanted to know you in a way no one has, not even her own sister whom you considered to be your best friend.
She wanted to get you to open up your heart to her.
Isabela didn't know when she started feeling all of these things. Maybe they were there from the start since you intrigued her with all those fights you had. All she knew was that it wouldn't be easy with how closed off you were, but she was willing to finally give the two of you a chance.
When you turned to find her staring at you once again, you start to feel embarrassed. You didn't understand what had her looking at you like that, but you didn't want to trust it. Isabela couldn't possibly change overnight, thinking it was some kind of trap for her to take advantage of you.
But you merely weren't aware that she had been softening up to you slowly. And your apology was the first step she needed to a new start with you.
