I pulled up in front of the apartment building, slipped on my sunglasses and climbed from behind the wheel. People exited the building, staring but I merely leaned against the side, crossed my ankles and waited until I say P'Topfah exit.
"Good morning, P'Fah." I spread my arms wide. "Your chariot awaits."
He frowned deeply at me as he made his way to the trunk to set a large case into it. I helped him lift it off its wheels and set it in the back of the vehicle.
"I have to go back for lights." Topfah told me.
"Do you want me to help you?" I asked. "It would save us a few trips."
He hesitated but I assumed he knew I was right.
Reluctantly, he agreed, and I followed up to his suite. When I stepped into the interior of his place, I had to smile. The walls were covered in framed photos and I knew this was what his sanctuary would look like.
I didn't have much time to take everything in. Topfah handed me a black bag that I tossed over a shoulder then gripped the handle of a suitcase. Soon, we were out of the door and heading back to the car.
Once we had everything settled in the vehicle, I pulled from the parking lot and began our three hour trek to my parent's beach house.
As we left the city behind us, the silence threatened to drive me crazy. Instead of letting it, I allowed my mind to wander back to the night before. I'd seen Topfah the moment he entered the bar. It shocked me seeing him in such an environment, but I watched the way he smiled at two of the guys he walked in but seemed to scowl at the other.
As I drank with P'Leo, Fiat and the others, I kept my eyes on them, watching across the way through the drawn curtains of their VIP. It was obvious one of Topfah's friends was running interference between Topfah and the other who was wearing entirely too much hair gel.
Then they left the VIP and descended into the lower area. The way this man touched Topfah angered me. In my head, he was touching P'Pob and I couldn't shake that thought. Without saying a word to the others, I set my drink down and exited our private space.
I walked up behind them just as this man was reaching for Topfah again. Pretending I was interested in Topfah hadn't been hard. The possessiveness I felt for this man was almost paranormal—it was insane how strongly it raged through me.
But having him in my arms hadn't been the plan. I didn't think he would agree to this, but he'd pulled into my chest, rested his chin on my shoulder for a while, then cuddled his face into my neck. I knew that was an unguarded moment—one that I accepted and held him a little tighter.
As we moved to the music, my soul told me Topfah belonged there. My soul wanted me to lose myself in the smell of him, the hardness of his body, the life of him.
But now as I drove us to the house, I wondered if I was betraying P'Pob. Was I breaking the promise I made to him?
I sighed.
"Are you okay?"
I glanced over at Topfah then back at the road.
"I'm fine, P." I cleared my throat. "We need to stop for gas—maybe pick up some snacks."
"Mmm."
The moment I pulled into the gas station, the car shut itself off before I could. I arched a brow and tried starting the engine again but it wouldn't come on. Frowning, I slammed a hand into the steering.
"What's the matter?" Topfah asked.
"I don't know." I pushed out of the car and glanced around.
"There's a mechanic here." Topfah pointed from the other side of the car. "I'll head over and see if we can get someone to take a look."
