I looked down at my hands and tried to think of a way to get out of this situation, without talking to Jon. I looked back, glancing at the door not even a foot behind where Jon stood... There was no way around him though... Unless I pushed him out of my way. I tried avoiding looking directly at him, praying to god he wouldn't notice me.
"Excuse me." I said quietly, he probably didn't even hear me this place was filling up with people.
"Oh, sorry." He apologized, side stepping out of the way slightly. "Didn't mean to be in the way."
I nodded, and stood outside the door immediately pulling a cigarette out of my back pocket. I lit it, and quickly put in my mouth to inhale the sweet poison I craved.
"Can I borrow a smoke?" Someone said from my right side. I turned to see Ian, I couldn't believe they were here. The two of us stared at one another in shock for a minute, before I absent mindedly handed him a cigarette.
"Thanks." He smiled at me.
"No problem." I replied, gazing at he ground.
"So, how have you been?" He asked, his voice hesitant.
"I've been good." I nodded. "And yourself?"
"Good." He nodded. "I can't believe it ran into you... I mean I knew you were in Ottawa but what are the odds I'd run into in this huge city."
"Apparently the odds are really good." I sighed, placing my cigarette back in my mouth.
"Have you seen the other guys?" He asked, stepping closer to where I stood.
"Seen, yes. Spoken to, not at all." I answered. "No offence but I don't really want to speak to any of them."
"I guess I understand that." He shrugged slightly. "We've missed you..."
"Please, Ian." I whined, I took a deep breath before continuing. "I don't want to hear it."
"Alright, I'm sorry." He sighed. "Are you going to stay for the show? I think you might like our new stuff."
"I have to." I told him, throwing my finished cigarette to the ground and grinding it down with the toe of my boot. "My friend Lindsay drove us here, and she's my only way back home."
"Oh, well I hope you like it." He smiled at me. "It was good to see you again, Devon. I mean it."
"It was good to see you too, Ian." I told him. "I'll be inside."
I walked towards my friends, only to find them sitting with Ben... Cassie was chatting away. "We're all jealous of her... She probably just went out for a smoke, you'll meet her as soon as she comes back!" She was talking about me. "But like, you probably won't even notice us once she gets here... She's that beautiful."
"I'm sure I'll still be able to notice you, you're gorgeous!" Ben replied. I rolled my eyes, and sat down on Lindsay's right, farthest from Ben.
"There you are, I was worried you'd ditched us to get back to your studying." Lindsay laughed.
"No, just a smoke." I told her smiling.
"Oh! See, this is who I was telling you about this is-"
"DEVON?!" Ben half screamed, looking as though he'd seen a ghost.
"Yeah..." Cassie sighed. "You know her or something?"
"No, he doesn't." I snapped quickly. "I'm going to get a drink."
I got up and walked towards the bar. I sat down in front of it, ignoring the guy to my left who was drooling over me and ordering my drink. I barely noticed someone sit down beside me, as I sipped at my drink.
"Can I get you a drink?" He asked.
"No." I snapped, rolling my eyes.
"Sorry." He laughed, and I immediately snapped my head up to see him... Aaron.
"Dammit, all of you are here?" I whined.
"Well, we're in a band together." He laughed a little. "You look great, by the way."
"Living in my room and studying has done me well." I told him. "You look great too, not sure about this long hair though... Glad to see you gave up on the bleach blonde though."
Aaron rolled his eyes at me. "You seem to have bleached your hair."
"Just the bangs, and for your information, I look hot." I laughed.
"You've always been beautiful, Devon." Aaron shook his head. "I'd better go get ready to play though. Promise me, we'll talk after the show?"
"I promise. Meet me at the side alley, I'll probably be smoking." I told him.
I went back to meet with my friends, as the band started up. They weren't bad, Ben wasn't rapping anymore so that was a good sign. Cassie wouldn't shut up about how hot Ben was, and how she was going to meet up with him later tonight. Lindsay seemed bored the entire time, and kept leaving us to get herself drinks at the bar.
As planned, after the show I met Aaron at the side of the building and I was in fact smoking. He shook his head at me as he approached.
"That's a pretty bad habit you know." He told me.
"I do, I study the human body I know everything this little stick of poison can do to my body, and I still do it." I told him.
"Well, it's your choice." He shrugged. "So what have you done this past year?"
"Studied. Worked. Attended my classes." I answered.
"No parties? Isn't that the whole point of college?"
"I don't have time for that, this is the first time I've been out in months." I told him. "I can't keep up if I'm never home."
"Still obsessed with school." He chuckled.
"Aaron we're heading out to a par- oh I didn't know you with someone." Jon stood at the side door, staring at the two of us.
"It's fine." Aaron told him. "Want to come to a party?" He asked me.
"I should be getting home." I told him, biting my lip.
"Come on, half an hour?" He smiled at me.
"Fine."
"We're coming." Aaron told Jon as we walked towards the door. I kept my head down, praying Jon wouldn't notice me.
"So, who's your friend?" Jon asked Aaron, smiling at him.
"Uhh," he looked over at me. "Devon."
I glanced up at Jon, and his grew incredibly wide and we just stared at each other for a second.
"Hi." I smiled a little.
"You've got to be fucking kidding me." Jon said, still staring at me. "How are you?"
"I'm alright." I nodded.
"That's good." He smiled.
"Let's go," Aaron pulled on Jon's arm. "You can catch up when we get there."
And we did indeed "catch up"...
