Once the boys left for class, Y/N turned back to Cater and Riddle, who didn't seem too worried about getting to class on time.
"I'll go later," Riddle said with a sigh. "The professors shouldn't have too much of a problem if I'm a few minutes late."
Y/N nodded. "There were a few other people saying that they felt that their body just moved on its own. It seems too consistent to be a coincidence."
Riddle seemed to agree. "I think it's safe to say someone intentionally is targeting magift candidates."
"You think that they're targeting their rival to increase their standing in the tournament," Y/N asked.
"The whole world will be watching," Riddle said with a sigh as he took a seat in a nearby chair. "One's performance in their matches can lead to a career in the future. It's not strange that some will do whatever it takes."
"It's still weird," Cater said. "You didn't feel any wind magic coming from behind you, right?"
Riddle shook his head. "Yeah, it didn't feel like an attack of any sort."
"There were some who were injured during class. I really wonder what's going on."
Y/N let out a childlike huff and got to her feet, walking over to the unlit hearth. In a storm of frustration, she waved her hand and cast some flames onto the fire, which danced in front of her tantalisingly.
"There's something that we're missing," she said as she stared into the flames. "This has to be some sort of magic, right?"
"We will just have to have the culprit spill everything when we catch them. To that end, I will assist you in the search," Riddle said, getting to his feet. He joined Y/N by the fire and placed a hand on her shoulder. "Do you remember when we used to play detectives when we were younger, Y/N?"
. . .
Four children were playing in the edge shadows of the forest. One girl, dressed in a simple blue dress with a pretty f/c bow in her hair, while two boys ran around her, acting like she was a maypole, while another lay on the ground, looking smug. The girl glared at the young green-haired boy and tapped her foot impatiently.
"I'm not a wall," she shrieked after a moment, getting irritated by how the boys kept running around her in circles. She was starting to get dizzy and sat down on the ground to pout. Normally, she had lots of fun with her friends, but today, she was getting annoyed. All they wanted to do was run around.
She had been dragged out of the house that she was using for her time in the Queendom of Roses by Trey and Che'nya that morning. They had insisted on playing detectives, once more, and Y/n was growing tired of that game. Well, Che'nya had been the one insisting on it. Trey seemed to just go along with it.
"You okay, N/N," Trey asked, scooting over to the girl's hunched figure once Riddle had chased Che'nya off to circle around another tree. Thankfully for them, the tree wouldn't get annoyed with them as the little girl had.
She nodded and stuck her chin out so that it could rest on her forearms. "Why am I always the maypole? You just get to lie down over there and do nothing."
Trey chuckled. "They don't mean to annoy you. Che'nya just gets..." Trey paused, trying to think of the word, "Excited sometimes." He noticed that Y/N was still looking annoyed, so he wrapped an arm around her tiny frame. They couldn't be any older than eight at the time.
"You went to Sunset Savannah, right?"
Y/N nodded. "We only stayed there for a little bit though. Mapa and Papa wanted to come here soon. I didn't even get to see my friends."
