We got into the office earlier than usual today. Even though it is Friday, our slowest day of the week today, I'm having staff meetings today since they take the longest. I've already been through two dreadfully long meetings with our headquarters in London and Italy, having them update me and having a headquarter review. I thought Europeans liked to keep things short but hell did they talk a lot. I literally took five hours of my day in those meetings. Now I'm meeting with the directors of each branch here in New York so that they can update me on how everything is going. Hopefully it won't take too long. I'm also thinking about firing the legal team today. After the meeting yesterday, I slept on it. Well, better said, thought about it all night and concluded that they were more of a liability than anything else. I didn't need them to beat the Millers. I could do that all on my own and apparently my new lawyer. Just the thought of that makes me clench my fist. Yesterday was not a good day for me, especially after Elijah Black made me work with his son. I didn't expect that, one I don't like it when people take me by surprise. Two, I don't like people threatening me. But I didn't have a choice other than agreeing to work with him no matter how much he looked like he was going to be a pain in my ass. I did some research on him and apparently he is quite a good lawyer, hasn't lost many cases and he is not a bad sight to look at so I guess I'm stuck with him. I know I could have looked for another lawyer, but that is the biggest law firm in the city and the company can't waste any more time with this case.
"Alice, tell everyone to be in the conference room in fifteen" I say to Alice.
"Already did,"
"I don't know how you do it." I swear she's a psychic or some shit.
In the meantime I decide on calling Mariana and letting her know that I will probably fire the legal team.
The phone rings a couple of times but no one picks up so I settle on leaving her a text.
Me: Just to let you know that after the staff meeting I'll probably fire the legal team.
Not even five seconds passed by and I already saw the bubbles meaning she was texting me back.
Mariana: What???? What happened to the plan????
Me: So you do have your phone. Why didn't you answer my call?
Mariana: I may be at the dentist
Me: In other words having a quickie with your boyfriend
Mariana: I actually needed a check up OKAY
Me: not of your teeth I'm guessing
Mariana: I'm not answering that
She's acting all shy now. When they first got together all she could do was tell me how great the sex was. Not that I'm very enthusiastic about hearing it now, the image doesn't go well with my brain.
Mariana: Now firing the legal team?
Me: Fine
Me: Yeah I just figured they really wouldn't be that useful.
Me: What do you think?
Mariana: Yeah do it, Idk if I can handle letting them walk around our company thinking they're getting away with something.
Me: Great, I'll let you know
Mariana: hey, yk how much ily right?
Me: what do you want
Mariana: So Mark has this brunch event sunday and I was thinking u should come with us
Me: No.
Mariana: COME ONNNNN it'll be fun.
Mariana: ok it won't be fun, but join us plssss. I just want u there so that I'm not alone when Mark is off talking about teeth
Me: I'll think about it
With that I close my phone. I swear she's taking advantage of my love at this point, I don't want to go to a boring ass brunch that will probably take longer and we'll end up being stuck there all afternoon.
"Ms. Callaghan?"
"Yes Alice" I say pressing the intercom button.
"When do you want me to schedule the board meeting?" I swear I can't take another two hour long meeting today. I just need time away from people, I probably should hit the gym tonight and get a couple of punches in.
"Make dinner plans with them for tomorrow, let Mariana's assistant know." I don't want to text her then she'll try and convince me more about going to the event.
When twenty minutes passed, I made my way to the conference room. If I've learned anything, it is that you always need to be fashionably late. All the company directors stand from the chairs saying the hellos and good afternoons.
"Everyone take a seat and let's start." I say moving towards the head of the table and taking a seat prepared to listen to everyone's updates. God help me get through this fast enough
---------------------
I don't know why the universe decided to get back at me today. Of course this had to be the longest one of all of them, they literally just spent three hours talking and I had to stop them saying I didn't have all day. Usually I would stop them at the half an hour mark, but this is a report. I need to know every relevant detail for this, I need to know exactly what's happening, so only in reports I let them take time, but of course they need to abuse that.
"Donna, will you stay back for a minute?" I tell the head of human resources. I want them to fire the entire legal department, I really don't have it in me to do it right now and I feel like it would be worse coming from HR, more unexpected.
"Sure," she says, staying seated. When everyone exits the room she makes her way towards me sitting on the chair to my left.
"I want you to fire the entire legal department," I say, suppressing a slight smirk from forming on my face. Not to say this brings me joy but it kinda does. Those sons of bitches deserve everything that is coming to them.
"The entire legal department?" She looks at me dumbfounded. Is she getting stupid or something?
"That is what I said wasn't it?" raising a brow at her. This is not a matter up to debate she is going to do it.
"I just wanted to make sure.... But why? Their report was good, nothing bad has happened. Why do you want to fire the whole department."
"Look Donna, I know you think that by questioning my decision you think you are doing your job, but you aren't. So do what I tell you or you'll be packing your office as well." I really don't want to be a bitch, well I kinda do but I can't let her think she can question my decision. I'm the boss here and it's her job to do what I tell her.
"I'm just worried that the company will face legal trouble if we fire everyone without any probable cause." I do have probable cause they are fucking betraying the company when it strictly says in the contract those actions will end in immediate termination and also morals. Everyone should have them, I'm not working with people who betrayed my trust. So instead of answering her I lean back on my chair and let my facial expression answer her statement. I was not kidding when I said that she either does it or she goes with them.
"Ok then, all of them including the director?" she questions
"Especially the director."
"They'll be gone by next week,"
"Tuesday," I'm only giving her a few days to get this sorted out and doing the paperwork. I want them out of here as soon as possible.
"By tuesday," she notes down a few things on a small journal she has on her hand and adds, "Is there anything else?"
"That's all," with that she stands up and leaves, closing the door behind her. This will be a hell of a couple of weeks
