Masquerade Mate: Chapter 1

Dedicated to all my story fans ;**

A YEAR LATER

*Alice*

It's been a year since I last saw my mate. I still had nightmares about that night. How come life had been soo cruel to me and given me a mate who easily dropped my ass? Everytime I saw a happy couple I couldn't help but be bitter because I didn't have that ONE person with me.

Not that I wanted him......

I glanced at the masquerade ball invitation that my two best friends were holding up in front of my face. They had been trying to convince me of going for that past half an hour.

No. I glanced at my little spongebob digital watch, make that an hour of trying to convince me.

Why would I want to go to a ball where surely tons of mates would be gathered to make fun of the girl who got rejected?

Yeah.....no. Definently not going.

Jen waved the invite again while Mel pouted and widened her puppy eyes.

"Pleaseeeeee!!!!" They both begged.

One word.

"No." I gave them a stern look before grabbing a book from the pile I always kept stacked up next to my bed.

"I give up!" Mel scowled, crossing her arms like a spoiled child who didn't get their way.

I sighed in relief hoping they would finally let the subject drop, but Jen had other plans.

"Look Alice I love you and all but we just want what's best for you-"

"You think going to some party will make me forget that my mate rejected me!?" I asked incredulously.

"No." She frowned. "I'm trying to help you out. All you've done the past year is mope around and act all bitter. You need to stop crying cause your mate rejected you. So what? It's his lost anyway. All we want is for you to have a good time and hopefully bury the past, but if you wanna keep being a bitch about it......so be it."

Ouch. That hurt.....

"What do you know? You've never been rejected by your mate you don't know how it feels." I mumbled, hiding my face in my book.

"Your right. I don't know. But what I do know is that I'm not just gonna keep my life on hold because of some air headed jackass. Do you ever think that maybe it was a good thing that he rejected you? I mean think about it, your life could of been hell by his side but the Fates had mercy and saved you from such misfortune."

I stared at my friend silently contemplating what she had just said. Maybe she was right. If my mate had been a jerk big enough to reject his mate after kissing her; than who knows what other cruel things he was capable of.

"Alice maybe you should consider getting a new mate. You know settle down with a nice guy who also has had mate issues and wants a better life. All the wolves in the U.S are gonna be there this could be your chance at love once again."

Another mate? My heart clenched at the idea but my less emotional side thought the idea could be good for me. I could start over and just let the past year go...

Finding a new mate could be for the best.

"If I tell you I'll consider it?"

"Then you have this weekend to decide; the Ball is in two weeks, we have to start getting everything."

"Okay. I'm going."

"YAY!!" Mel squealed jumping a couple of feet in the air.

Her grin was amazingly wide as she clapped her hands together. Suddenly she landed on the ground in a big heap with a grunt. Jen and I looked at each other with a smile before checking on her. She was still on the floor now lying on her belly and rubbing her back, where she had initially fell upon.
