“So, tell me how you’ve been lately.”
I was currently in my therapists office—the very last place I wanted to be, mind you. It was a warm day today, so I was wearing jean shorts and a black tank top. Spring was finally settling in. The flowers were blooming, tree leaves turning green, animals reappearing. It was definitely something I could get used to.
“Well, I’ve been fine. I’m driving again.”
Diane lit up. “That’s great! What an achievement. Now that you’ve accomplished that, you should set another goal.”
That’s what this session was about. Achieving our goals. She asked me what I wanted to be when I got older. I had no idea. What was I good at? Um…English? No, definitely not. Math? Hell to the no. History? Yeah, I definitely enjoyed history. That might work.
“I like history,” I told her, shrugging.
“That’s a start. Now narrow it down. Would you want to teach history? Or maybe be an archaeologist? Or you could write history books?”
“Uh, I’d probably teach it,” I told her shyly. I’d always liked the thought of being a teacher. I was good at teaching people things. I’d been a tutor before Jake died for younger kids. It was something I enjoyed.
“Good, good,” Diane said, scribbling some things on her notepad and adjusting her square glasses.
When my session was done, I met my mom out in the lobby. Diane told her to schedule at least one more appointment, so my mom complied. It wasn’t for a few weeks, thank the heavens. The less I saw of Diane, the better. I just wanted therapy to be over. I still wasn’t convinced I ever needed it, but whatever.
When we got home, Adrian was sitting in my living room with my Dad, watching the game. They sat there, talking like old buddies, clapping each other on the back and laughing.
“Okay, this bromance thing has got to end, ‘cause frankly, it’s starting to creep me out,” I said from behind them. They turned and laughed at me.
“Hey, babe,” Adrian said.
“Hello, sweetheart. You snuck up on us there,” my dad said jovially.
I narrowed my eyes at them. “Adrian, can I talk to you for a sec? In private?”
He shrugged and stood up. I led him up to my room. “What is going on with you and my father? It’s weird! Not even he and Jake were like that!”
Adrian smiled smugly. “That’s ‘cause I’m great with parents. You know me.” Adrian winked at me, making me blush.
“Keep that up and I won’t be able to contain myself,” I said, wrapping my arms around his neck and kissing him.
“Well, when we’re living together, you won’t have to contain yourself.”
Living together? What? “Oh really? And when in the near future are we going to be married?”
“When I ask you,” he winked, tightening his arms around me.
“I’m sorry, but you’re too pretty for me to marry.”
