"This week you will be partaking in a 5,000 word essay. You will be partnered up and will be responsible for collaborating with your partner to work with them. You can choose any literary topic. For example, your analytical views on the Vampire Academy series or the evolution of the perspective of vampires throughout history. You may choose your partners."
My English teacher raised her hand in a gesture that we may begin.
Before I could turn around, a tap was on my shoulder.
"So, partners?"
I turned around and looked Adrian squarely in the eyes. "I warn you, I'm a bit of a control freak when it comes to English papers."
He smiled. "You can do the whole damn thing for all I care. When do you want me over?"
"After school is fine."
He shook his head. "I can't right after school because I'm going out with some of the guys. They invited me to a game of football in the park."
For some odd reason, I felt a pang of jealousy. I had just been getting used to Adrian being my only friend and vice versa. I didn't exactly want to share him. What if he all of a sudden decided that the guys were better to hang out with than me? But there was nothing I could do about that.
"Sure. Just come over when you get back. Unless you decide not to come, then just shoot me a text."
He nodded and leaned back in his chair. I turned around again. Then froze. Two of the "popular" chicks you could call them were staring at me and Adrian. The one right in front of me looked at me like "ew" and the one to her left stared at Adrian like he was a t-bone steak.
"Is there a problem?" I asked them politely.
"Are you two like--dating?" The one in front of me asked. I could understand why she thought we were. Since Adrian had arrived at this school, three and a half weeks ago, we also hung out. At school, outside of school. All the time.
"Why do you want to know?" I said coldly. There was no way I was gonna let these bitches ruin Adrian's life. Not that they would have, I just--oh, never mind.
The blonde on the right looked at me and back at Adrian who was probably listening intently, pretending NOT to be listening intently. "I wanted to know if he was available. He's super hot."
I don't know what made me do it. I really don't. But I did it. "Yes, we're dating."
I heard a choked laugh. Yep, Adrian had been listening.
I turned around. "Aren't we sweet cheeks?"
He smiled up at me with mock adoration. "Yes we are pumpkin."
The two blondes looked away in both disgust and disappointment. Adrian and I burst into fits of silent laughter. It was the best I'd felt since Jake died. It felt really good to laugh like that again.
I sighed and we began to brainstorm ideas for our paper.

I stood outside the school doors. It was warmer than it had been in a while and almost all the snow was melted. I held the phone to my ear.
