At the moment, life was pretty bearable. When I read, I didn’t think about Jake or my shitty luck in life. I was into this amazing book about the construction of Rome and no one bothered me, so life was okay at the moment.
I loved reading nonfiction books like that. Especially older, more historical books, like the assassination of JFK or the downfall of the Titanic. It was like taking a time machine and going back in time. When I read books like this, I not only got smarter, but I traveled to a different world.
I settled down in my desk during my first period class. I hadn’t gotten very good sleep last night. There was about fifteen minutes before class started, why don’t I just lay my head down and take a little nap…

I swayed my hips to the music blaring from the radio, while mixing the eggs and flour. I sang along, wishing that I could actually carry a tune, and laughed as Jake sang along with me. Unlike me, he could actually carry a tune. I loved listening to his voice. It was soft, soothing, very rhythmic. I could fall asleep to that voice every night ‘til I died.
Jake put his hands on my hips and began to salsa us around the kitchen. This was one of Jake’s favorite songs, 50 Ways To Say Goodbye. And I loved listening to him sing it. I dipped my finger in the lemon cake batter and spun around, wiping it on his nose and laughing.
He chuckled darkly. “You have just unleashed the beast.”
He ran to the mixing bowl, grabbed a finger full and ran at me. I screamed and laughed, attempting to dodge him, but he pinned me to the wall and wiped it all over my face. I giggled, licking some. “Mmm…tastes good. I guess that means we’re doing something right.”
He smiled and kissed me softly on the lips…
“Will Jamie Rivers please come to the office? Jamie Rivers, please come to the office.”

"Will Jamie Rivers please come to the office? Jamie Rivers, please come to the office."
I woke with a start, looking around. My face was warm on one side, which meant I probably had a huge red mark on my face from laying it on the desk. My confused face was probably so priceless, I actually expected people with cameras to jump out at me. So, I got up and made my way out of the classroom door and to the front office.
When I got there, I saw four people: the principal, the secretary, Rita, and Adrian.
My first thought was What is going on here? But I caught on pretty quickly. Rita was enrolling Adrian into school.
"Hi Rita, hi Adrian." I said, walking up to them.
The principal smiled kindly at me. "Ms. Ward here tells me they are your new neighbors. I called you to the office to see if you would kindly show Mr. Ward here around the school and take him to his first hour class."
Adrian smiled at me.
"Um....sure, I could do that." I said looking at the principal.
Great.

"So, um, this is the cafeteria...where we eat." I said stupidly. I face palmed myself in my mind's eye. Of course he knows we eat in the cafeteria! Stupid, stupid, stupid!
Adrian laughed. "Really? I wouldn't have guessed that. So, is this place cool?"
I shrugged. "It's actually boring. Well, I don't have any friends around here. I just read most of the time. Everyone here is pretty lame."
"You aren't lame." I looked at him. Adrian's eyes bore into mine as we walked. I shrugged and looked away.
"If you say so."
We left the cafeteria and went into Building A. "This is the science and history department. There's the Chemistry labs, the classrooms. Bathrooms down there."
Adrian looked around observing everything.
I led him to Building B. "This is the math and English department. Building C is the Arts department. Basically, it's where they throw every class that isn't math, English, history or science."
Adrian walked around, looking into classroom windows. "So, why don't you have any friends? It's hard to believe a pretty girl like you doesn't have a boyfriend."
I stiffened. Adrian looked at my stony face. "What? Did he break up with you? Bad fight? That's okay, you'll get over it eventually."
"Adrian, shut up." I snapped.
Adrian looked up at me confused. "What's wrong? What happened?"
"I don't want to talk about it."
"I'm sorry, if I said something that upset you. I didn't mean to. And you can talk to me."
This new, sweet side of Adrian startled me a bit. He had been a bit quiet the first day I met him, and a bit flirty too. But he was now displaying some side to him that boys usually didn't have, or they pretended to have. He really was an enigma I couldn’t wrap my mind around. Who was this guy? Where did he come from? What does he do in his down time? I found myself wanting to know more about him.
I sighed. "I had a boyfriend...his name was Jake. He died three months ago."
Adrian was silent for a second. "I'm so sorry."
"Yeah, that's what everyone keeps saying to me, but sorry isn’t bringing my boyfriend back, is it?."
"Did you love him?"
"I've been a fucked up mess for three months now. What do you think?"
Adrian cleared his throat. "I...." He stopped, apparently not knowing what to say. "I'm sorry."
There was nothing I could say to that. So I took Adrian to his first hour class. Which happened to be the same as mine.
Coincidence? Well, just ask the Fates what they think.
