EPILOGUE:

I smiled at Diane, taking my seat on the sofa across from her. Her hair was up in its usual bun and her glasses were on and ready for seeing. It had been about a month since I’d last seen her. I’d rescheduled our next session due to what happened with Adrian and then Prom. I was just too busy at the time to think about going to a therapy session that I’m convinced I didn’t need.

“So, tell me how you’ve been?”

“I’ve been wonderful. I have straight A’s in school, I decided I’m going to attend KU with my boyfriend, Adrian, and I know what I’m going to make a career out of.”

Diane’s eyes widened. “Whoa, back up a second. Boyfriend?”

“Yeah, I met someone. He’s amazing. He moved in next door, in the Berkeley’s old house,” I told her smiling.

Diane grinned. “That’s wonderful! Tell me about Adrian.”

“He’s the best guy I know. He’s sweet, he’s kind, he’s loving, he’s hot,” I said, winking. Diane laughed. “He really completes me. He’s everything I want and more. I know I was torn up about Jake, but Jake is gone, and Adrian is here. There’s a lot I’ve come to realize now. I always thought that every guy in the world should be like Jake. But Jake and Adrian are two different people. Jake was gentle, generous, and sensitive. Adrian is very different. He’s passionate, and protective, and intelligent. And although Jake and Adrian are very different, I still love them both. Adrian’s taught me a lot. That I don’t need a boy to be happy. I choose when I am happy.” I smiled. “Adrian fixed me you when I was broken and I owe him my life.”

“He fixed you? How did he fix you?”

I smiled. “He mended my heart.”
