Two Weeks Later
When I got to the cemetery, I put the flowers on his grave. The old ones had withered and died long ago. The bright yellow lit up the grave with life.
I touched the headstone, tracing my fingers over the engraved name.
“Hey, baby. It’s been a while since I came to visit you, so I thought I’d stop by. Tessa’s with me. Well, she’s in the car waiting. I’m so lucky to have her,” I said, smiling. “I just wanted to tell you I miss you. I miss your smile, your laugh. Everything. It’s been hard without you. But I’ve learned that there’s a lot in life to live for. That you have to keep living for those who are still with you.”
I sat down, cross-legged on the grass. “Your mom isn’t doing too well,” I said. “She’s taking it really hard.” I swallowed. “I just really wish I could talk to you one more time.”
“Well, all you had to do was ask.”
I looked up sharply and there he was, sitting on his own headstone. “Jake?”
He smiled. “Hello, love.”
I jumped up and hugged him tightly.
“Whoa there, tiger! If I remember correctly, you have a boyfriend,” Jake said, laughing and hugging me back.
I laughed too. “Yeah, I wanted to come see you one more time before I get back to the hospital…”
He smiled. “You don’t have to sugarcoat anything. I know you came here for closure.”
I smiled sadly. “Yeah, I did.”
“I understand,” Jake said. “You’re lucky to have him, you know.”
I nodded. “Yeah, I am. He’s a great guy. I love him so much.”
I heard footsteps. Jake and I turned to look at who it was. Tessa was walking up to us, from the car. I turned back to Jake, before Tessa could get there.
“I guess this is goodbye, Jake,” I said, sadly.
He nodded and smiled. “I know. Goodbye, love.”
Tessa came up to me, sitting down beside and laying a gentle hand on my arm. “Are you alright?”
“Yeah, I’m alright.” I looked up at the headstone. Jake smiled and slowly dissipated. I lowered my head. But this time, it wasn’t in sadness. It was of closure.
In a way, I think Jake was meant to die for me to be with Adrian.
“Robbie called. Adrian’s doctors are releasing him today,” Tessa told me. “We should probably get down there. He was wondering what was taking you so long.”
I sighed and smirked. “That’s Adrian for you. Such an impatient boy.”
Tessa laughed. We stood up and headed to the car. I stopped and turned back to the headstone.
