Previously, in Parts 17 and 18:
Cleo stabbed Hope in an attempt to activate her vampire side. Hope used black magic to fight back, Lizzie and Josie witnessed her loss of control for a split moment.
Hope decided Cleo could stay at the Salvatore School, much to Josie's disapproval.

Lizzie knows that Hope had a reason for being upset with Cleo, but she didn't expect to see her use black magic. She also didn't expect Hope to admit to being so accustomed to dark magic.
She knew that once the girl's fingertips began to turn black, that she was losing control of herself in the dark magic. Lizzie wasn't sure if it was because she had been stabbed or because her father was mentioned, but either way, she didn't like the demonstration of black magic.
With Lizzie and Josie's family history, the use of black magic and the violence that took place at Hope's discretion, whether warranted or not, unsettled her. It made her uneasy about her sister's relationship, as well as her own friendship, with the were-witch.

After Josie threatened Cleo and walked out of Alaric's office, Hope went to check on her. Before Hope left that night, the two girls said they would have a date the following night, try to unwind and have a quiet evening together to contrast the day's events. Hope agreed to make dinner and set up a movie at her house, since they didn't exactly watch the film they had chosen last time.
Hope enjoys treating Josie to a home-cooked meal and a quiet evening in. Hope can do absolutely nothing with Josie, and she'd still feel content.
Since the girls are both on winter break as of this week, they don't have to worry about how late they're together or about school assignments.
The monsters haven't been coming to Mystic Falls as often, Hope wonders if it's the spell she and Cleo cast to cloak her location or if it was the consciousness of Malivore becoming stronger against the monsters trying to escape him.
Either way, she's grateful for the opportunity to provide Josie with an enjoyable evening without having to worry about a monster interrupting them during the 3rd course of their dinner.
Hope heads over to the Salvatore School fairly early in the day, wanting to see Josie and ask what she'd like to have for dinner. When she gets there, she knocks on the door to Josie and Lizzie's room.
Lizzie answers, "Oh, hey Hope, what's up?"
Lizzie doesn't open the door for Hope to come in, but Hope can hear the shower running in their bathroom from her spot in the hallway, "Hey, Lizzie, is Josie around?"
"Yeah, she just got in the shower." It's a lie. Josie got in several minutes ago and would probably be out any minute now.
Hope senses a bit of tension between the blonde girl and herself, but doesn't mention it, "Oh, okay. I was just coming by to see what she'd like for dinner. I was planning on making sushi, but—"
"She's allergic to seaweed. Good thing I was here, you could've killed the girl." Lizzie lets out a condescending laugh.
Hope tries not to let it bother her, "Oh, I don't think that ever came up in our conversations before. Good to know... I'm headed to town now, so I guess I'll just text Josie to ask her what she'd like."
Lizzie gives a fake smile, "Great idea. So glad you could stop by."
Hope tries to force a smile and nods her head.
Lizzie shuts the door, and Hope makes her way back down the hallway. She texts Josie as she walks, letting her know she stopped by and asking what she'd like to eat. She hits send and heads off to do her Christmas shopping.
__________
Once Lizzie shuts the door, she turns to walk back over to her bed. She stops when she hears Josie's phone buzz on her nightstand. She walks over and looks at the screen,
