The sunlight ducks out of the corner of my eye
Slow, walking lazy lines across trees and flowers
While grass brushes my ankles until they're cold.
The night is still far enough away from here
I'll get back before the trees become shadow puppets,
their branch fingers making horror movie
Pictures puzzling the backs of my eyes and mind.
The setting sun warms my back, its golden beams
Wrap around my wrists, leading me back home.
As my feet find familiar earth, tracks guiding me,
The notes of a faraway life sung out an open window
Giggles and sighs as the signs of dinnertime reach my ears
A puzzle of pieces that sound so joyous in the light of dusk
My feet draw me closer, my own puzzle piece task complete
Set aside in a pile to be needed later but important nonetheless.
My hands clutch crucial ingredients, the crunch of drying leaves
Waiting their turn to fulfill their own important task
The creaking of a door draws my eyes away from the sky
Where the sun says its goodbyes to our roof
And the moon calls its welcome from blocks away
My name is called out an open window, a hand waves to me
The field falls behind my back, my puzzle piece turns and stills.
