The first thing Hongjoong noticed when he woke up was that the other side of the bed was empty, the sheets gone cold.

He cracked his eyes open and despite how blurry the world initially looked in his half-asleep state, he knew that Seonghwa was nowhere in the room.

The sky was still dark, with only the dullest rays of light breaking through the clouds.

Either it was still obnoxiously early in the morning or the weather had taken a dreary turn.

Hongjoong would've loved to stay in bed longer but his bladder was screaming at him to get up and do something about it so he reluctantly pulled the covers off and headed towards the bathroom.

He wondered for a moment where Yunho was.

The guy had awful timing and a tendency to forgo knocking, which resulted in him walking in on Hongjoong midstream too many times to count, when he remembered that Yunho had gone home with Mingi.

It was just him, Seonghwa and the other two roommates he rarely ever caught glimpses of.

At the sound of the toilet flushing Seonghwa called out to Hongjoong, "I'm in the kitchen Joong."

After he slipped into a pair of Seonghwa's sweatpants and a shirt he wasn't sure was his or not, Hongjoong padded into the kitchen.

Eyes heavy and half-lidded from sleep, he very narrowly missed walking into the corner of the countertop.

"Good morning," Seonghwa greeted him with too much energy for eight in the morning, if the clock on the stove was anything to go by.

"'s too early," Hongjoong grunted and then there was a warm mug being pressed into his hands.

"Here you go," Seonghwa said, "It's coffee, black, just like your soul."

"Too early for jokes," Hongjoong mumbled which resulted in Seonghwa filling the quiet morning with his laughter as Hongjoong hid a small smile behind his mug.

He took a long sip, hummed with content at the taste and warmth.

"I'm making eggs, do you want some?" Seonghwa asked once his laughter subsided.

Hongjoong hummed his approval and slipped into one of the barstools.

Time passed by relatively quietly while Hongjoong watched with his head propped up by one hand as Seonghwa cooked them both breakfast.

He slowly started to become more coherent and awake the more he sipped on his coffee.

It was only a few minutes later when Seonghwa finally slid a fork and a plate of scrambled eggs sprinkled with brown sugar across the bar top to Hongjoong.

He even refilled the mostly empty coffee mug before he sat in the seat next to Hongjoong with his own plate and cup of coffee.

"Why are you even up so early?" Hongjoong asked after he swallowed a mouthful of egg.

Seonghwa stabbed at a clump of eggs, "It's just habit I guess, I'm always up this early."
