~

Your clothes were still soaked through from the night before.

It had been a long and exhausting haul and the two of you were about ready to drop. Spirits had attacked you all throughout the night. It felt like it was never going to end and you realized why Guts made sure to separate himself from you during the nights. He were keeping you safe from all the dangers.

You felt that much more grateful that he'd stuck with you throughout all of this.

His life were far from easy so you were just glad to at least be there during the days to take care of him while he rested.

This time you felt as though you might be needing rest too. Your body were tired and your eyelids heavy. Lucky you had grabbed a sword for you ended up needing it to watch his back last night.

Guts had done most of the heavy work; swinging his giant sword around though every now and again a small one would creep through for you to take care of.

*Flashback*

You recalled when Guts had first taught you to wield a weapon to his standards. He were an expert in more than just swordplay having all sorts of weapons.. like that hand cannon and those throwing knives. Sometimes you wondered where he'd learned to defend himself so well. His background suggested some kind of military.. maybe even knight but you never dared ask. He didn't seem like the type happy to reflect upon his past.

You smiled to yourself remembering that fine sunlit morning. He'd just returned from another brutal night of slaughter and exhaust. Rather than following his usual routine of going straight to sleep; he instead approached you and threw something at your feet.

You were startled when you saw he had tossed a saber sword at your feet.

"Pick it up"

You were wide eyed as you hesitantly reached down taking the pretty silver into your hands. You admired it but looked up at him like he were crazy if he expected this tiny thing to work against his hunk of steel.

"You'd be surprised what a good saber can do. An old acquaintance of mine used to use one and it withstood my own sword even at full force."

You were startled to even hear a mention from his past even if it were only brief. You tried not to behave too intrigued incase he closed off again and said 'forget it.'

From that day he taught you on proper form, footing, as well as movement. He swung at you and you dodged with a racing heart and smirked.

"You're a quick learner"

"Well.. it's not like you give me any other option. It's sink or swim with you" you panted and he chuckled under his breath.

You just remember how scary it were facing against him. Initially he didn't even use a weapon against you. He let you try and come at him with just the sword he had gifted you.

After so much training he were still shockingly tough to strike.

You only managed to cut his cheek ever once and that's when he smiled.

"Congrats. You've passed my training"

It hardly felt like you were anywhere past mediocre however Guts saw it as enough to defend yourself if he were ever not around.
