Scarlett Campbell came from a long line of fisherman who had lived on the cut for generations. The Campbell's were one of those families that everyone respected. Everyone on the island knew how hard they worked.

Scarlett's grandfather opened his own seafood restaurant at the age of twenty five. He quickly made a name for himself. Everyone loved his food. It didn't matter if they were a kook, pogue, or tourist.

When her grandfather died her dad immediately took over. Benjamin Campbell had been working at his father's restaurant since he was a teenager. It had been a dream of his to take over since he was a child. Ben always wanted to be a chef and the restaurant was a way that he got to live out that dream.

Both of Scarlett's parents happily ran the restaurant. Her mother Lillian Campbell didn't mind putting her dreams aside if it meant that her husband was happy. The woman was perfectly okay with helping with the restaurant.
Scarlett had even helped her parents by picking up shifts at the restaurant on a few occasions.

The restaurant prospered until a bad storm struck the island. Sadly, the restaurant was hit badly. It left the Campbell family struggling financially. They didn't have the money to repair it.

It broke Benjamin Campbell's heart to sell his father's pride and joy. But it was the only thing he could do. He sold the restaurant to one of his old friends. This friend had apparently just moved back onto the island with his wife and daughter.

A month later the Campbell family had their house packed up and sold. It was decided that they were making the move to New York. Scarlett obviously had no say in this decision. Apparently, Benjamin had found himself a well paying job as a personal chef. His new boss even payed to fly the family out.

While Scarlett's dad loved his new job in the city her mom missed the island. Lillian missed the ocean and warm breeze. She hated leaving her little sister behind. Scarlett's aunt Mercedes had lived with the Campbell family since she was a teenager.

Lillian didn't have the greatest upbringing. Her parents were both druggies that cared more about getting their next fix than they did feeding their daughters. Mercedes was like another daughter to Lillian. The age gap between the two sisters was ten years. In many ways Lillian raised her younger sister all while trying to raise herself.

Lillian and Mercedes' upbringing reminded the girl very much of her blonde friends. That was probably one of the main reasons why her mother never turned the boy away when he needed somewhere to stay. She saw herself in the boy.

Scarlett knew it almost hurt her mother as much as it hurt her to leave the blonde haired boy behind. Both Campbell women wished they could have taken him with them. Lillian had promised her daughter that Mercedes would look after the boy while they were away.

Unfortunately, Mercedes didn't honor her promise. Instead she turned the boy away. He was left alone feeling abandoned when he needed someone the most. For months he hoped and prayed that Scarlett would come back to him. The boy would wait on the porch of the Campbell's old house wishfully thinking that they would return. But they never did.

Eventually, he gave up. He chose to pretend like Scarlett never existed. It was easier for him to pretend that he didn't care. Pretending was better than admitting the truth.

The brunette sighed looking out the small window from her seat on the ferry. She was home and she didn't know how to feel. Should she be happy? Scared?

What she did know was that she was not looking forward to moving in with her aunt. Scarlett hadn't spoken to Mercedes since the day she left the island all those years ago. The older woman didn't bother reaching out to her niece. Which hurt the young girl considering how close they once were.

The teenager huffed lugging her two heavy suitcases off of the large boat and onto the dock. She tried to hide her distaste as people rushed by her. Glancing around she didn't spot any familiar faces. Mercedes was supposed to pick Scarlett up at exactly 2:30 but she was nowhere to be seen.

"Miss Campbell?" A voice called out. Scarlett's attention turned onto a shorter man dressed in what appeared to be a butler's uniform. "My name is Robert. Your aunt has asked me to escort you to her home."

"Of course she did." The girl replied sarcastically. "She couldn't even bother to come and get me herself."

"Let me get those for you." Robert smiled awkwardly gesturing towards her bags.

"It's fine. I can manage."

"Oh no miss. I insist." Robert nodded leaning down and grabbing both suitcases.

Scarlett sighed not bothering to argue with the man. She assumed he was just doing his job. He was probably scared she'd tell her aunt if he didn't carry them. Scarlett of course wouldn't do that to the poor guy. He seemed nice and Scarlett felt bad that he had to wear that awful uniform in the heat.

"Do you know why Mercedes couldn't pick me up herself?" The brunette questioned from the back seat of the luxurious SUV that Robert was driving.

"I believe Mrs Foxworth is having lunch with one of her friends. I'm sure you will meet Mrs Cameron when we arrive at our destination. Her and your aunt are very close friends."

Scarlett nodded looking out the window. It honestly didn't surprise her that Mercedes would ditch picking her up to gossip with one of her friends. Ever since her aunt married some rich guy she had dramatically changed. It's like she developed every bad quality a kook could have.

A small smiled stretched onto the girl's face as a brown van flew past the black SUV. She could clearly see it was filled with a couple of teenagers. One of them just so happened to be hanging out the window cheering. Scarlett could tell they were driving towards the cut. She wondered if she possibly knew them before.
