The next morning I do my usual morning stuff and the head downstairs to the Pit where the initiates are waiting.

"The first thing you will learn today is how to shoot a gun. The second thing is how to win a fight." I place a gun in everyone's hands, trying to avoid eye contact.

"Thankfully, if you are here, you already know how to jump on and off of a moving train, so I don't need to teach you that. Initiation is divided into three stages. We will measure your progress and rank you according to your performance in each stage. The staged are not weighed equally in determining your final rank, so it is possible, though difficult, to drastically improve your rank over time. We believe that preparation eradicated cowardice which we define as the failure to act in the midst of fear. Therefore each stage of initiation is intended to prepare you in a different way . The first stage is primarily physical; the second, primarily emotional; the third, mental." I say.

" But what...... What does firing a gun......have to do with....bravery?" Peter asks between yawns. Another ignorant Candor.

I flip the gun in my hand a press the barrel to his forehead, clicking the bullet into place. I actually kind of want to pull the trigger, but I know I can't do that. That would be something that Eric would do. I don't want to resemble Eric in any way.

" Wake up! Your holding a loaded gun, you idiot, act like it." I lower the gun, but he still stands there, frozen in fear.

" And to answer your question.. you're far less likely to soil your pants and go crying to your mothers if you're prepared to defend yourself. This is also information you may need later in stage one, so watch, now." I answer.

I turn to the wall of targets for the initiates to practice shooting with. I then fire at one of the targets and then lower my gun. The bullet, like I had hoped, went right through the center of the target.

The rest of the initiates practice for a while.

Edward is probably the best so far. He hits the center of the target on his third try. Peter is also really good. He hit really close to the center on his second try.

I glance at Myra's target which actually has a few bullet hole in. I'm impressed!

I then see Edward lower his gun and shoot it directly in the center of Myra's target, so it would look like she made the shot. I'm sure he's been the once making her shots the whole time.

I look at Tris and she honestly looks extremely awkward. Whenever she fires it doesn't even come close to hitting the target. The Erudite boy with blond hair, Will I think his name is, says something to her. She then faces the target once more, her face full of determination, and hits the side of the target with the bullet. Will says something else to her, causing her to smile.

After about five rounds she finally hits the center of the target and I find myself smiling.
