—Chapter 1—
BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP
I wake up to my alarm clock going off on my bedside table. The clock says it's 10:00 in the morning. I have half-an-hour until I have to meet Zeke, Shauna, and Lauren in the cafeteria.
I sit up and move to the side of the bed, pulling my legs over the edge. The four of us all decided we would have breakfast in the cafeteria together instead of in our apartments today.
I walk over to the bathroom and hop into the shower, setting the alarm on my phone to make sure I don't spend too much getting ready. When I'm done with my shower I walk into my bedroom and put on my clothes. A jacket, tee-shirt, pants, and shoes. All black. Typical Dauntless clothing. The same type of outfit I have worn every day for almost the last two years.
About two years ago, two years ago tomorrow to be exact, I transferred here, into Dauntless, from my former faction, Abnegation. The society here is made up of five factions, each following a different virtue. The factions were created after a war that happened a very long time ago to prevent any future war from happening again.
My former faction, Abnegation, is the selfless faction. They believe that people being too selfish was what caused the war. They provide food and clothing for the Factionless and control the government. Abnegation members find joy and fulfillment in doing things for the good of other people.
Amity is the most peaceful faction. They believe aggression and hostility was the cause of the war. They also appreciate music and art, generally tending to laugh a lot. The Amity faction members farm the land and live outside the fence. No one really knows what lies outside the fence and nobody can get out, except for leaders. There is a lock on the gate that keeps us all in with many Dauntless guarding it. I usually work in the control room, so I know the combination and I, unlike many, could probably escape if I really needed to. Unless, of course, they decide to change the combination again.
I always make sure I know the combination, or at least when I can, incase for some reason I need to escape. Tension had been high between Erudite and Abnegation because Erudite believes that they should be the leading faction, not Abnegation. Erudite has been releasing fake reports about Abnegation and there were even rumors about a war that may happen. I don't exactly think that's going to happen, because if it did, the faction system would probably be destroyed and I'm sure Erudite, as well as every other faction, wouldn't want that to happen.
That brings us to Erudite, the intelligent faction. They basically think stupidity is the reason the war broke out. They are always eager to learn and always want to know how everything works. When making decisions they also base it off of logic and believe that everyone should be educated.
Candor members are very honest and believe people being untruthful started the war. They never keep their mouths shut and always tell the truth, even when it hurts. Candor members don't easily get offended and actually want to know the truth about them.
Lastly is my faction, Dauntless. Dauntess are brave and believe cowardice was the cause of the war. We always love adrenaline rushes, but may not always have the nicest behavior. People often call us crazy, but it doesn't offend us. We kind of are crazy and I don't care if I admit it. We always do what we believe is right no matter how difficult it is to achieve.
