My mind raced and my heartbeat quickened, they found me. No, I let them find me, by bringing Liam here, but now the entire situation was jeopardized.
"No!" I instantly regretted my tone.
"I beg your pardon, Hackathrift Pippa?" the Commander asked me, I coughed,
"Send the Prince of Wales a message and my location," I replied, the Commander bowed and left. As soon as he left, I turned back to Liam, pulling up a chair I sat down beside the cot and rested my head in my hands. I felt a hand tug and I looked up to see Liam, awake, blinking from the evening light in the nearby window.
"They- they're taking...-you away." I sighed,
"No-," I stopped at that, I didn't want him to be alarmed but he already knew, "Just like they brought me here, they'll take me away." I grasp Liam's chapped hand on my back and set it down on his bandaged chest, "But you'll be okay- okay? No one will touch you or try anything to hurt you if they tried. It's almost like they committed a crime to the Royal family."
"Evelyn, don't let them- if they take you, they won't bring you back." Liam protested, I nodded but in my mind, I had a plan. My eyes briefly glanced at the sky, it was paled with an orange, red tint. Almost crimson, it was nearly dusk. I turned back to Liam,
"Liam, rest. No one will take me anywhere, not until I say so. You have to trust me." Liam nodded also he was wary. I gripped his hand. Once I was sure Liam dozed off. I got up from the chair, I had a few minutes before I could leave under the cloak of darkness. I walked past the cots that were filled with wounded soldiers, each younger than the last. A few nurses walked past, and in the middle of them was a sheet covering something, I bit my lip, looking at Liam one last time before I walked over to the commander.
"Commander, make sure nothing and no one. Hurts that young German I brought with me if I get word of something happening to him, there will be consequences." I snapped, the Commander bowed,
"Yes Hackathrift Pippa, a few of my officers outside will escort you to the plane, when you're ready." I nodded,
"I will be a few minutes, I want to check on that buckskin horse. Where is he being kept?" I asked,
"In the yard, tied up with the other horses." I wasted no time in getting there to see Zephyr, I walked outside. I glanced around until I spotted him, he was cleaned from nose to tail. I walked over and offered my hand, Zephyr nosed it. I patted him,
"Take care of Liam, alright. I can't come with you, Zephyr, so take care of the kid. Promise?" I asked, Zephyr let out a snort. I smiled, "Goodbye Zephyr." I gave him an absent pat before walking away, bag in hand and covered in my cape. I glanced back one last time then I vanished into the darkness.
Into the man-made hell of Adolf Hitler, and I wasn't coming back out.
