"So anyway, Cassy, I know you didn't call me just to tell me about an individual of great potential. So what's the special request?" He could not be any more enthusiastic. I would like to say I'm joking about his eyes brightening with everything that happens, but I'm not, it's getting very bright.

"As always you're right but you still get excited. She needs a minor nobility title, it's just so she can get land for her swarm and for me not to drown in paperwork." Replies Cassandra, as if she wasn't blinded by the King's hellfire gaze.

Which I am. I can't see shit.

"Your Majesty, I apologize for interjecting but I can't see anything with how bright you're shining." I can literally see how much brighter it gets as he turns to me. Or maybe it's from the accidental compliment. I'd know if I wasn't still blinded.

"OH! Right! Sorry! I forgot you were level 1 and weren't immune to blinding effects, also just call me Raz, please! Being called your majesty feels wrong when I'm nearly always the shortest person in the room." Dear god he's really cute, I was trying to think harder of different things but now I can't ignore it. If I wasn't sure he could break me in half, I'd pick him up and hug him, then promptly apologize for daring to touch royalty.

"Also, yes, as soon as her ID's done you should let her get enough place for a proper Hive. I've always wondered how fast they can grow. I trust you to make the process as fast as possible Cassy, if I get no complaints from her in the next 6 months you'll get a reward, so don't fuck up!"

"Of course Raz, I'll make sure there are none! But how high should her title be?" A sensible question, seeing as it decides a lot, he sits on the desk and tilts backward, holding himself up with his arms.

"Well, I think making her a Countess is overkill for now, but considering how much land a Hive needs it's the only one that won't look too low compared to others." He replies, now literally laying on Cassandra's desk.

"So countess, yes?" Cassandra picks him up and puts him in a chair. He nods.

"I hereby declare you, [Overmind] Kaylee, Level 1, Countess of the Wild Fields." As he says those words I get a faint ding from Sys.

"Now if that's everything, I am actually rather busy. It may have been a solid decade but most of this country's administration is still a mess." He sighs and cracks his shoulder as he gets up.
"Oh and Kaylee, promise me you'll hold nothing back, alright?" He turns his head towards me, just a bit more than should be possible.

"I wasn't planning to after receiving an aegis this powerful." He grins at my words.

"Wonderful!" With this, he taps the ground once with his foot and disappears as fast as he appeared.

...

"Wait, the portal was just theatrics?" I almost feel betrayed.

"Yes and no. It's easier to leave here using teleportation than portals, but the opposite coming here."

"Somehow the weirdest thing. Hopefully, that was all I needed to get an ID." I really lament whatever may be left of my common sense.

"Yep. I just need you to touch this crystal and cycle mana through it, that way we can make your ID recognize you. Additionally, this lets us register your mana signature."

Seems fair enough. I put my hand on the crystal and try to focus on moving my mana through the crystal.

the crystal shines a red-black light.

"Alright. That should be it. Here's your ID, I recommend putting it in your Inventory. Also, I'll send a quest to escort you to the Wild Fields."

"Thanks."
