They got in the elevator and went down into a room where there were old computers everywhere.
"This can't be the data-point this technology is ancient" Natasha stated.
Then she saw a small flash drive port. She put the flash drive in the computer causing it to power on.
"Initiate system?" The computer asked
Natasha then said "Y-E-S spells yes" while typing on the computer.
Natasha smiled as the computer started up all the way.
"Shall we play a game?" She smirked then said "it's from a movie that..."
"Yeah, I saw it" Steve told her cutting her off as Adeline looked confused
A voice then interrupted their conversation before it continued.
"Rogers, Steven. Born 1918. Natasha Alianova. Born 1984. Adeline ,Barnes. Born 1920, good to see you again my dear." The voice said making Adeline uncomfortable.
An old camera caught their attention as it began to move and scan them.
"It's some kind of recording" Natasha said
"I'm not a recording, Fräulein. I may not be the man I was when the Captain took me prisoner in 1945, but I am." The voice remarked
The computer screen then showed a photo of Dr. Arnim Zola.
"You know this thing?" Natasha asked Steve
"Armin Zola was a German scientist who worked for the Red Skull, He's been dead for years "Steve explained
Upon seeing the image Adeline got a flash image of Zola examining her with Red Skull right next to him, causing her to gasp quietly and hold her head as she felt a slight pain in her head.
"First correction, I am Swiss" Zola corrected, "Second, look around you. I have never been more alive. In 1972, I received a terminal diagnosis. Science could not save my body. My mind, however that was worth saving on two hundred thousand feet of data banks. You are standing in my brain."
"How did you get here?" Steve asked
"Invited" Zola answered
"It was Operation Paperclip after World War II. SHIELD recruited German scientists with strategic value" Natasha said
"They thought I could help their cause. I also helped my own" Zola replied
"HYDRA died with the Red Skull" Steve pointed out
"Cut off one head, two more shall take its place" Zola responded
"Prove it" Adeline said worried that they will take her back and worried for the safety of Steve
"Accessing archive" Zola said
The computer screen began to show them an old footage of Johann Schmidt / Red Skull of how SHIELD actually came to be.
"HYDRA was founded on the belief that humanity could not be trusted with its own freedom. What we did not realize, was that if you try to take that freedom, they resist. The war taught us much. Humanity needed to surrender its freedom willingly after the war, SHIELD was founded and I was recruited. The new HYDRA grew. A beautiful parasite SHIELD. For seventy years HYDRA has been secretly feeding crisis, repeating war. And when history did not cooperate, history was changed" Zola explained
"That's impossible. SHIELD would have stopped you" Natasha pointed out
"Accidents will happen" Zola pointed out.
The computer screen showed them that HYDRA killed Howard and Maria Stark, and wade it look like a simple car accident. The computer also showed the death out Nick Fury.
"HYDRA created a world so chaotic that humanity is finally ready to sacrifice its freedom to gain its security. Once the purification process is complete, HYDRA's new world order will arise. We , won Captain. Your death amounts to the same as your life, a zero sum" Zola continued to explain
In anger and fear Adeline used her power to crush the main computer.
"As I was saying..." Zola said showing up at a different screen
"What's on the drive?" Steve demanded
"Project Insight requires insight. So I wrote an algorithm" Zola answered
"What kind of algorithm? What does it do" Natasha asked
"The answer to your question is fascinating. Unfortunately, you shall be too dead to hear it" Zola said
The doors started to close and Steve tried to stop them from closing with his shield but it closed before it could get there. Natasha grabbed the drive and then looked at her phone.
"We got a bogey. Short range ballistic, 30 seconds tops" Natasha informed them
"Who fired it?" Steve asked
"SHIELD" Nat answered
"I'm afraid I have been stalling Captain. Admit it, it's better this way. All of us...out of time" Zola said
Steve and Adeline saw a small opening on the ground. Adeline moved the metal pice aside. Natasha jumped in and just as it was exploding Adeline and Steve jump in. She protects Natasha while Steve shielded himself and Adeline.
They managed to get out from under the building rubble just as the STRIKE team arrived to search the area for them.
"Call in the asset" Rumlow said noticing footprints.
