I wake up one morning to a text message from Hiromachi Nanami, the bassist of Morfonica and my best friend in the whole world. This is what she said to me.

Nanami's text: Hey, your birthday is coming up!

I smiled at her text. Nanami and I have only known each other for a few months now, but it feels we've known each other for years now. I'm proud to call her my best friend. Speaking of, I should probably respond to her.

Your text: Haha, I'm surprised you remember my birthday.

Nanami's text: Of course. I care about you too much, after all.

Your text: Heh, you're the best.

Nanami's text: You're going to love what I have planned for us, too. :3

Your text: Really? What is it?

Nanami's text: I can't tell you. If I did it wouldn't be a surprise, right?

Your text: Yeah, I guess you're right.

Nanami's text: Now I should get going. I do have school, after all.

Your text: Yeah, I should get ready myself.

I put my phone down and started doing my usual morning routine before going to school. I wonder what Nanami has planned for me on my birthday... I can't wait to find out.

A few days later...

Location - Station Entrance

My birthday is finally here, and I couldn't wait to see what Nanami has planned for me. I was looking forward to it for the last few days.

Nanami said that she would meet me by the train station after school, but she didn't say anything else after that. Now I was more curious than I was a few days ago.

I arrived at the train station and there was Nanami in her school uniform.

"Nanami!" I called out to her.

Nanami saw me and came closer to me.

"Hey, I'm glad you can make it."

She hugged me and I hugged her back.

"Ready for your surprise?"

"Yeah, I am."

"Awesome! Come on!"

She takes my hand and we headed somewhere. Not sure where we're going, but I have a feeling I'll find out shortly.

20 minutes later...

Location - Local Restaurant

Nanami drags me to the restaurant she works at part-time. She told me she managed to get the day off just for me. That was nice of her.

We sat down at one of the tables, and a cake was provided for me.

"Oh wow, that looks good." I said.

"I'm glad you think so." She said.

I start to eat my cake, and it was the best thing I have eaten all week. While eating, Nanami got up to go somewhere. Where was she going?

Moments later, Nanami comes back and she gives me a birthday present. It was rather big, though. What on earth could it be?

"Go on, open it." Nanami said with a smile.

"Umm, okay?"

As instructed, I began to open it. My present was a bass guitar. I always wanted one, but I never had the money to get one for myself.

"Is this... for me?" I asked while looking at the instrument.

"Yep. I know you've been wanting it for a while, so I've been saving up my money, and got it just for you."

"Nanami... thank you."

"Haha, don't mention it." She grinned. "Getting a gift for my best friend is what normal teenagers do, after all."

I let out a small laugh as she said that.

"Well, you are right about that."

With my new birthday present and my best friend by my side, I began to enjoy the rest of my birthday out of pure happiness.
